Are sat navs really clever or...

was this a massive coincidence?

This has been driving me nuts. I've googled this and nothing comes up so over to you lot. Over Christmas, I was doing my usual 3.5 hour drive to visit relatives. It's only these last 2 years I've done it with my sat nav connected to my phone to get live traffic updates. This means when my phone rings or I get a text - it comes up on my sat nav screen. I'm not that popular so it doesn't happen that often. I was doing about 60mph on a dual carriageway that was fairly empty (I drive late evening / early night to avoid traffic). Definitely wasn't doing 70 as it was ever so slightly bendy. My sat nav started ringing with a weird ring tone stating the number was private. Never seen that before. Chose to ignore it as I thought it was a spam call. 10 - 15 seconds later down the road I came across an RTA where the emergency services hadn't arrived yet. It was on the inside lane / against the barriers and there was plenty of space for me to go into the outside lane. It was just after a long bend so it came up fairly fast. There was no need for me to stop as there at least 2 cars stopped that weren't involved and a couple of people wandering around so I probably would have made it more dangerous.

Was that call on my sat nav the emergency services warning me? It just seems weird I can travel for hours (both there and back) and it was the only time I got a call.

Only other thing I need to add is that about 10 minutes previous to that, 2 cars overtook me in very quick succession and totally flew past me. Probably both doing 100. Who knows if it was them.

Coincidence. How would emergency services have your number anyway?!

masterstef · 05/01/2019 19:21

Are you kidding me? You think emergency services phoned you when you were driving to warn of a collision?!

imaflutteringkite · 05/01/2019 19:24

What? How would they know your number and why would they ring you? I think they have more important things to do like deal with the emergency.

PavoReal · 05/01/2019 19:25

Ha! That answers my question. Thank you! One bit I didn't say is that it didn't come up on my phone, so no - they wouldn't have my number. I didn't know if they had some kind of link. Obviously not. As you were everyone Grin

Yes, it's the latest generation of GPS technology, OP... Grin

imaflutteringkite · 05/01/2019 19:28

Wait so it wasn't your phone that rang, it was the sat nav? I guess then it's possible that it makes that noise if there is an incident ahead. I'm not sure though as mine doesn't but it does draw an angry red line.

PavoReal · 05/01/2019 19:30

Kite My train of thought was I thought they might alert nearby cars to get them to slow down and hence lessen the potential casualty list before they got the chance to close the road.

Correct, phone didn't ring or register the call. It was just the sat nav.

Were you using Waze? The app will alert you if someone has updated it about the incident.

Livedandlearned · 05/01/2019 19:36

If emergency services weren't there it's unlikely any information would have been sent out to a sat nav, but who knows!

PattiStanger · 05/01/2019 19:38

If it was just the satnav then I'd say it was quite possible it was some kind of alert - do you still have the instructions or check the manual online it might explain it

PavoReal · 05/01/2019 19:41

It was Tomtom, not linked to Waze as far as I know. It was a weird ring tone so it might have been an automated message had I chosen to answer it.

Well, we were coming home on the motorway today and our satnav said ' there is an incident 4.9 miles ahead, slow down now'! Almost straight away we saw the motorway signs changing to 50 mph then we passed the accident, so they do warn you, but only by speaking 😊
