London in a day?

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 04/01/2019 21:59

I am meeting a friend in London for the day on Sunday - she lives in CA and is passing through for other reasons so we've managed to squeeze a day together. Very exciting! I didn't live in London so have no real idea of what to visit. She enjoys art and museums, is happy to walk around all day and pack in as much of London as possible.

Any recommendations gratefully received!

What station will you be coming into?

There might not be much open on Sunday, but the City and around is one of my favourite areas to walk around; Leadenhall Market, Tower of London and Tower Bridge, St Katharine Docks, St Paul’s, Monument and more.

I don’t know if it has a particular schedule, but the 15 bus route has old routemasters running between Tower of London and Charing Cross. A bit of nostalgia and passes some great sights.

Her hotel is near Heathrow and I'll be coming into Euston.

The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery are next door to each other at Trafalgar Square so very central and near to the Southbank and the TATE. Good for lunch too x

I’d aim to meet at Victoria Station then wander up past Buckingham Palace and through Green Park. Breakfast/coffee at the Wolseley then to the Royal Academy for a browse. Pop into Fortnum and Mason, then down to Trafalgar Square. National Gallery, then lunch in the rooftop restaurant at the National Portrait Gallery. Prebook and ask for a window table. After lunch, jump on number 11 bus from Trafalgar Square to St. Paul’s. Cross the Millennium Bridge go to Tate Modern. Show at the Globe or wander on the Southbank. Then river boat from Bankside to Tate Britain, and back to Victoria

All lovely suggestions, thank you.

I've sent this thread to her so she can make the final decision.

I wouldn't try and do too much or you'll just be exhausted.

I recommend doing, say, the SouthBank. You can see HoP, go up the London Eye, where you'll be able to see traf square, buck palace, etc. Go to tate modern. Loads of places for lunch, and a boat trip if you fancy it.

Have fun
