Passport due for renewal 1st April - do it pre/post brexit or no difference?

Just that really. Passport expires 1/4/19 any benefit in renewing early? Or will it literally make no difference?

No info on passport website so thought I'd ask here!

I think after 29 March you could well need 6 months valid on passport to travel. Depends when you are planning on travelling, but wouldn't be amazed if delays after Brexit so would renew at least 2 months before travel, ideally more.

Surfingtheweb · 04/01/2019 22:55

Next week the government are launching a big info campaign about what we need to do to be ready for Brexit. There will be adverts on TV, radio & social media. Maybe wait for the info to come out before you decide.

Ilovetolurk · 04/01/2019 23:06

Anniefield How truly MN of you Grin

I renewed my passport last month it took less than a week

Given the new govt campaign I would renew sooner than usual in case there’s a rush

To put this into perspective each month lost by renewing early costs about 60p

chipsnsauce · 04/01/2019 23:56

Brilliant thanks all.

I didn't realise you could no longer carry months over either, so good to know.

I think I'll take the small hit and renew early then. It's not needed until summer but will apply after payday at the end of the month in case there does end up being a mad rush!

This is a good time of year to renew your passport and renewing at the end of this month hopefully will still be the same.

We did ours in January a couple of years ago while they still added on the extra time and they came back within a week, but by the time you get to April/May and into the summer they take much longer as you seem to get a lot of people who don't realise they are about to expire until they start preparing for their summer holiday.

Add in this year all potential Brexit complications such as possibly needing six months left even to travel to Europe, blue passports and any other general uncertainties and it could all get a lot worse. To avoid all that for the sake of losing what will amount to a few weeks, I'd get it done sooner rather than later.

To put this into perspective each month lost by renewing early costs about 60p

That's on average, but the reality is that it will cost most people nothing and a few people the whole cost of an extra passport, because it will only cost you any extra if you need one more passport in the new system than you would in the old system before you die.

Evennow · 05/01/2019 05:42

My old passport ran until June 2019. I renewed it online in November 2018. The new one runs until November 2028. Renewed early to get it done before B day. Online renewal trouble free, new passport received in 8 days, text messages sent to advise me at every stage.

AGHHHH · 05/01/2019 06:22

I wish people would check their facts before giving advice.

Yes, you should have!

FrigideBarjot · 05/01/2019 09:49

I am now wondering whether or not to renew mine. It doesn't expire until next December, but we go to Europe a few times a year

TidaQuel · 05/01/2019 10:59

My passport doesn’t run out until October 2019 but sounds like it will be pretty much useless after April as I’ll need 6 months on it to travel anywhere? And as they won’t add the remaining months to new passports anymore, does his mean they’ll really only be useable for 9.5 years? Or am I being thick?

dementedpixie · 05/01/2019 13:32

Only certain places need 6 months left on the passport although will that change after brexit? Don't know tbh

MeetOnTheledge · 05/01/2019 13:46

If we leave with no deal 6 minths will be needed in the EU. Importantly, if when you renewed your passport previously, extra months were added, these do not count, so its 9.5 years from when it was issued rather than 6 months before it expires.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 05/01/2019 13:51

I will be renewing mine early so that (assuming article 50 doesn't get extended/brexit cancelled etc) I get another 10 years with my EU passport. Yes, I KNOW that once we actually leave (espec after transition/implementation period - if that ever happens) it will make diddly squat difference in law and practicalities, but it will make me feel better!

EduCated · 05/01/2019 13:53

Mine also expires in April. I’m away in February but debating renewing once I’m back.

NOTthepinkranger · 05/01/2019 13:55

I don’t get what difference having the blue one will make? You’ll still have to queue with everyone else from the U.K won’t you?

Dual citizenship here so not sure - someone feel free to correct me.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 05/01/2019 13:59

Yes, although I think I can queue with dd who is a dual national (other EU country) in the EU queue. As I say, I KNOW that the words "European union" on my passport won't mean anything once we actually leave, but I'd rather keep them on for as long as possible.

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 05/01/2019 14:36

We are renewing child passport and will therfore loose a month or so. Not worried

Hoppinggreen · 05/01/2019 18:23

True not but I just dint want one on principle
Bit daft I know but I want a European one as long as possible.( DH and the dc have dual nationality)

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 05/01/2019 18:28

Same here hopping. I'm going to wait and see what happens with the meaningful vote , and then if it all looks like it is going ahead on schedule I will put my renewal in.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 05/01/2019 18:42

I renewed as wanted EU passport for as long as possible.

Longdistance · 05/01/2019 18:54

I renewed mine last month. I did it online. It was so easy. Had my photo done in a booth that gave me a code to put in, and my pic came up.
I didn’t get my 4 months back though (due in March). I wanted plenty of time to renew as we’re always away somewhere.

Hoppinggreen · 05/01/2019 18:59

black do you think you will be able to Q with the rest of your family?
I’m hoping so and I would prefer to at least have the same coloured passport as them so my Blue one doesn’t stand out

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 05/01/2019 19:13

I think so hopping although obviously there is an element of discretion about it. They do generally prefer families to clear immigration together rather than to stand in separate queues. However this will probably only last while dd is little. I think if it was just me and dh we'd probably have to stand in different queues.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 05/01/2019 21:47

It won’t matter anyway. You can can all Q in the non EU line - the non EU line in Europe is shorter anyway.. No one is worried about British passports on the whole.
