What should I paint?

Hello wise folk

I took up painting a few months ago by way of a new hobby, I've been doing a lot of landscapes / sea which are views locally to me (although tricky to get to without a car so I can't get to these spots). I've been working from photos I've taken but would like to try something new.

I paint with acrylics and has a 100cmx30cm canvas and a 50x50cm canvas.

I'd like to try something new over my last couple of days of holidays.

Any suggestions? Smile

It kind of depends on your style of painting, but I’ve found that birds make surprisingly interesting subjects.

I think it’s the different textures and patterns that can be found on each bird, even the “boring looking” ones, that keep it interesting. And there are so many different types to choose from!

Plus, if you ever get to a point where you want to sell your work, birds are very popular. Happy painting 😊

My upstairs bathroom needs a new coat of paint....

Failing that Google pictures of Glencoe, it is a beautiful landscape!

Ooh thanks all! Hadn't really thought of birds, I like layering up lots of acrylics to get textures but as I say I've just been doing this a few months as a hobby!

socktastic glencoe is beautiful, a couple of hrs from me. Lots of good ideas thanks!

It's a wonderful hobby isn't it. Really interesting and great fun.

If you go onto Google Earth you can do a virtual drive round any country in the world. Okay the views are all from the road, but I've found some really interesting places to paint in places like South America. (Also, because the dash cam photos aren't as polished/perfect as "proper" photos it encourages you to be more painterly and to use your imagination more with the colours etc.)

Alternatively still life can be fun. Set up a couple of bits of fruit or veg and a nice vase or something...

I hadn't thought of Google images pie good tip.

I started it as a response to a break up and having more time on my hands. It's a brilliant hobby, once I get going I forget my phone exists!

If you Google reference photos for painting you will get lots of inspiration. Failing that you could set up a still life with objects from your home.

I've just started as well, just before Christmas. I have also just done landscapes but I make them up.
I'm loving it though I don't know what to do with them now I've got a few, some will go on the walls but the really rubbish ones? at least the show some sort of progression.

Piewacket · 07/01/2019 19:18

buddhasbelly That's really lovely, I can't believe you've only been doing it a few months. The water is so nicely done and there's a great sense of distance. If you are doing this already you are going to be just absolutely fantastic in a year or two.

ohdearmymistake Have you watched Bob Ross and his landscapes? He made up his lanscapes too, and they always looked like great fun to paint. (And he was so good at mountains and "little happy trees" (his words). He seemed like a lovely guy and so good at what he was doing. (His son took over after he died, but he wasn't as good as his father.)

I have the same thing with my paintings. I paint over the top of the ones that haven't worked. But some of them are things that aren't great enough to put on the wall (and you can only stick SO many pictures up without the place looking a bit cluttered.) but you also don't want to throw them away either as you are quite pleased with them. I've given a few away, but often people don't really want them so I end up with a cupboard full of unframed canvas boards.
(I bit the bullet and threw a load away recently to make more space.
My family are going to be totally gutted if it turns out that I was a modern Van Gogh after my death. Grin (Though to be fair that's unlikely. Grin )

ohdearmymistake · 07/01/2019 20:14

buddhasbelly That's really good, I would be very happy if I could do that.

Piewacket Thank you I have never heard of Bob, I will go and look him up. I too fear I'm going to end up with loads of canvases luckily they are fairly small.

Piewacket · 07/01/2019 22:39

ohdearmymistake I don't know hat this particular one is like, as he made so many series, but this is a bit of Bob Ross.
