Has anyone booked a ferry and drive holiday to Europe for this year - how much could brexit fuck it up?

I had resolved not to book anything until after March, but it comes to this time of year and I really need something to look forward to...

Has anyone booked and if so are you worried, or if you're holding off, why?

I know it's all been said, but surely it won't still be chaos in July? I mean it know it will be horribly shit for the foreseeable, but we will surely be able to get out of the shithole for a bit, won't we? I know if it all goes ahead I will really want to leave for a bit.

I don't know, there's a sale on now and I'm worried prices will rocket up if there's a deal/it gets called off or delayed and lots of people who've been waiting all start booking come the end of March.

What do you think?

We have two weeks booked in France for the summer hols. Going by ferry but not Dover/Calais so hopefully quieter ports. So far only paid the deposits but fully expect to go. We have just come back from the US so already have International Drivers Permits which should still be in date.

Hopefully any issues should be resolved by then but who knows...

Not driving but flying to Mallorca in June

£400 deposit so just gonna hope for the best

I think there's something really unethical about travel companies taking money from people when they don't know what's going to happen with regards to Brexit.

What are they supposed to do? Shut down their business?

I booked and paid for 12 return journeys Dunkirk to Dover as I usually do in November. I will be going back and forth this year as we will be moving home and I need to bring books etc back to put in storage before we move back to UK in October this year. There is usually some disruption, be it migrants blocking the E40, increased security post Bataclan, or the Belgian farmers blocking the motorway, or the French dock workers going on their usual summer strikes, so nothing runs at all either way and Op Stack is used.

I don't expect there to be any reason why I can't travel between Belgium and the UK. Yes, there may be delays, but having been held up by some shocking road accidents on the Belgian side of the equation in the 13 years I've been doing the journey back and forth, there is always the potential for disruption.

I think Dover is to be avoided in the summer full stop it doesn't take much for there to be chaos.

We're going from elsewhere but tbh that isn't really anything to do with Brexit.

madeyemoodysmum · 06/01/2019 07:13

There is no way that brits are going to be stopped from going to Europe. They won’t give up the tourism it’s too much money to Europe.

As long as your not traveling the week we leave id just book it.

MeetOnTheledge · 06/01/2019 07:21

If you want a ferry holiday, you need to go from a port which can not accept the really big commercial shipping (which are planned to replace air freight if air freight cocks up) , which I think is Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Portsmouth is already a major freight terminal, with limited road access due to being on an island. The port authority has been issuing warnings of gridlock in the event of a no deal exit.

Sofabitch · 06/01/2019 07:23

I've booked.

I guess I didn't think about it at the time. But I am a little worried now.

But balance is due may. So I guess I could cancel.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 06/01/2019 07:28

No one knows what's going to happen, I was dithering between France and Cornwall and have opted for Cornwall so I can stop worrying (and before everywhere gets booked up in the UK if it is a hassle travelling).

I have found on my social media that those who cannot spell, punctuate or, in fact, make a lot of coherent sense tend to be The 'It'll be fine!!' - brigade. Those who can't understand nuanced arguments and discussion in tricky newspapers, thus rely on red-top tabloids.

Didn't I read that you need a reading age of 12 to understand The Fail? And that the Torygraph is for those readers, but with a couple of 'O' levels?

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 06/01/2019 22:09

Op I'm with you, I need something to look forward forward too, we are flying in April.
To France. The flight was under 200 we have not booked camp site yet but its smallish deposit.

Hoping for the best. As pp said imagine how much the tourism would suffer if we can't there this year!

If the Brits do not go to the Med, others will take their place.
Tourism is not a big enough driver to interfere with the EU supporting the four pillars of the Customs Union.

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 06/01/2019 22:11

miljah

Are you alister Campbell?

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 06/01/2019 22:12

I meant the actual businesses, campsites restaurants etc. The air lines, ferries, trains, insurance companies and tour operators, gite owners and all the people who rely on tourism.

Ta1kinPeace · 06/01/2019 22:15

Willbeat
I know, but nothing they will say will change the EU's negotiating stance.
If nothing else because the vast bulk of businesses support the EU approach.
Brits can be easily replaced with other nationalities.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 06/01/2019 22:22

We're camping in the UK this year rather than going to France. Mostly because we have a pre-schooler and the thought of being stuck in traffic at or around the port is not appealing. I'm concerned not just at Dover but other ports getting busy too. I wonder if lorries might be put on ahead of cars (although I don't know how they load ferries), but I expect there will be great pressure to get lorries across the channel.

We would plan to drive to France again in 2020 though.
