Apple Watch - is it worth £400? Do I need it?

I’m on a health and fitness drive for 2019 (aren’t we all!) so I like the idea of ‘closing my circles’ - is that worth £400 though?

Is it an arse to have to charge it every day?

Do you actually, truly use all the features?

All opinions welcome!

I got my daughter one for £215 for Christmas. I have one and my husband also has one. We love them and like the wallow-talkie element of them too!

I love mine, I have the 3 so last years one, battery is good lasts a few days for me

If you’re an apple nerd your love it

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2019 21:19

I’ve had various fitness trackers before and the Apple Watch has been the one that has been the most motivating and had the most impact on my fitness.

The other features, like texting, phoning, Siri etc are also useful, and I love being able to easily ping my phone to check it’s in my bag or find it around the house.

It doesn’t take long to charge so you can do it while you’re showering and dressing.

Mewe · 03/01/2019 21:21

I love mine and the charge lasts a few days. I pop it on charge over night and it goes into “nightstand mode”, acting as an alarm clock type display.

I got the Apple Watch 3 on offer for around £200. Not sure I’d spend £400 on the new one, as not sure it has £200 worth of extra stuff.

Personally I love it. Tracks my runs on strava (has gps) & can have music on go (have to have Apple Music though) these two things mean watch and Bluetooth headphones are all I need for a run (no tsking phone too.) Was surprisingly tough to find that functionality on a fitness watch. If you’re not bothered about that there are tons of fitness watches with possibly more fitness functionality & likely cheaper.

Having said that I’m surprised how much I like all the extra smart watch bits too. Being notified of msgs means I don’t need my phone on me, and don’t miss important stuff whilst being able to step away from the endless smart phone gawping. And Apple is so user friendly and intuitive it’s easy to get to grips with.

And yes I like closing the rings. To the extent I offered to go out in the cold to get milk so I finished my activity ring.

Charging been ok - I think I’ve had to do it every other day. Charges fast though. About 30 mins maybe?

Best Christmas present of 2018 for me!

WeightWatching2019 · 03/01/2019 21:26

Ooh you’re all so enabling, I love it!!

What exactly are the differences between the 3 and the 4? I’m not fussed about having the cellular connectivity as my phone is never far from my hand Blush

The bloke in the Apple shop said it took two hours to charge so if it’s actually only while I’m in the shower that’s good.

DH and I both love ours, but mine is through my health insurance, so I only had to pay a small deposit, and as long as I do a certain amount of exercise, I'll get the rest for free (over 2 years). I don't know if I'd want to pay full price for it. It definitely is a massive motivator for me, much more so than the Fitbit I had previously.

Rockbird · 03/01/2019 21:28

Love mine. Got one when they first came out in 2015, so nearly 4 years ago, and just replaced it with the new one. Love being able to take calls without getting my phone out although I sometimes feel a bit of a prat. My old one was running out of charge halfway through the day but this one is still at 88% when I put it back on the charger for the night. I absolutely love it.

WeightWatching2019 · 03/01/2019 21:29

I did enquire about Vitality but the health insurance itself has to be a minimum of £30/month in order to get the free Apple Watch. I got a quote of £58/month Shock and the only way to get it down to £30 was to take off all the outpatient benefits - what’s the point in that!!

I bought mine for £150 second hand. They’re good but there’s no way I’d spend £400!

carrie74 · 03/01/2019 21:32

My Vitality is through work, so I'm only paying the tax on the benefit luckily. TBH, I get so much from my Vitality, I'd consider it anyway - free Apple Watch, free Amazon Prime, free Ocado deliveries and 25% off 'healthy' food, a free cinema ticket and free Starbucks drink every week, half price trainers once a year...I've got quite a lot from mine 😂

WeightWatching2019 · 03/01/2019 21:34

25% off food?? Tell me more... our grocery bills are ridiculous!

I can't count the times people at work have asked me the time because their Apple Watch had gone flat.

Star49 · 03/01/2019 21:39

I love mine, couldn't be without it now. For me it's definitely worth the money and I love the notifications you get as well as closing all the rings. You can compete with other people who have a watch now too as an incentive

WeightWatching2019 · 03/01/2019 21:46

Is the ability to ‘type’ with your finger a gimmick or useful?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 03/01/2019 21:59

You don’t need to, speech recognition is surprisingly good enough for sending text messages.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 03/01/2019 22:51

If you don’t get the cellular version, are there still enough features to make it worth bothering with?

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2019 22:56

I carry my phone with me everywhere so have no need of a cellular version.

hmmwhatatodo · 03/01/2019 23:08

All i know is my son got himself one (no idea about which one) and it spends mist of its time in his room than on his wrist after all that fuss.

user8905 · 03/01/2019 23:24

I've got an old model - series 1. It's slow as you'd expect. The main thing I don't like about them is that they're bulky and ugly looking. The ring closing novelty has worn off for me but I still wear it. Go for an older or second hand model - check the hotukdeals site for current deals. Worth it if you stick to the regime - but that applies to any fitness watch.

user8905 · 03/01/2019 23:25

PS: it works well as a remote control for Spotify on your iPhone/Bluetooth headphones too.

HannahnotAgnes · 03/01/2019 23:35

I got one for Christmas & love it.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 23:41

Does it use your phones data?

Didsomeonesaybunny · 03/01/2019 23:51

I really like mine - granted it’s not the best sports watch going but it’s a pretty good all rounder I think. If buying specifically for sports I’d recommend going with a Garmin - far better and gives great stats.

If you just want to use it for texts, calls, music and say Strava it’s a really good investment. I particularly like dictating messages into mine (makes me feel like James Bond ha!)
