Been happening for a few years now.

Only ever happens when I sleep alone (non resident partner most of the time - he is here maybe 2 nights out of 7 ).

I am wakened in the night by either my bed shaking (or at least that what it feels like) not violently just a gentle shake.Or alternately I feel someone is sitting on my bed.

Usually I am so tired and annoyed I just think 'Oh hell it's that weird earthquake shakey bed thing'However last few times I have made a real effort to check I am awake- biting my inside cheek etc- and it is really happening.

Too scared to open my eyes.

Tell me the logical explanation - dont live near underground or railway UK-so unlikely earthquake. No pets.

Ghosts Grin

JennyWreny · 03/01/2019 20:31

Sleep paralysis?

sirmione16 · 03/01/2019 20:32

ConfusedShock this terrifies me. But I've experienced unexplained occurrences, too. Sorry I can't think of any logical explanation.

Is there any noise when this happens? Like pipes gurgling it could be the vibration of?

Do you check for earthquake records? As in UK there are still some of course just not often.....

Freaky!

Sallygoroundthemoon · 03/01/2019 20:33

I used to have this at university, the feeling someone was sitting heavily on the corner or side of my bed with a little bit of shaking. I definitely wasn't asleep, it often happened in broad daylight and bizarrely it was worse when I was hungover...

OrangeSunsets · 03/01/2019 20:33

I get too sometimes. No idea what it is!

BigStripeyBastard · 03/01/2019 20:33

Oh, definitely ghosts.
Or maybe you just take a while to fully come round from a dream state. Can you set up a web cam to record your night time activities?

Crunchymum · 03/01/2019 20:36

Don't read "The Exorcist" Shock

Loserinlove · 03/01/2019 20:38

There’s a name for it which I can’t remember... I suffer from it too.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 03/01/2019 20:39

A heavy transport vehicle going by? That's when our whole house sways in itself.
And the UK has earthquakes, too, though not really running to a schedule... Any history of mining in your area? Where I grew up there were always tremors / settling going on even after the mines closed down.
(Our last one closed in December Sad)

hughjackmanswife · 03/01/2019 20:41

It's sleep paralysis. It used to happen to me a lot particularly at university when I was either extremely tired, stressed, overworked or hungover. It's very common and one of the symptoms of it is 'seeing' or 'feeling' things and believing that they are real.

ChristineBaskets · 03/01/2019 20:42

I was sitting up awake one night and dh started to shake in his sleep. It was a fast vibration, like a buzzing! It freaked me the hell out. I found mention of an explanation online and it was harmless, I can't remember what it said though.

cherryhealey · 03/01/2019 20:44

No mines around here
Live in country so no traffic
Modern house no pipes
I did wonder about sleep paralysis - but I am aware when it is happening. I am able to move when it happens.
Need to read up on it I think.
Thanks for reassuring me I am not going made or it's another symptom of the menopause!!

Yes ive had this happen even in different houses im not sure what is. I normally ignore it. I woke up one night saw the bed move and the cat jumped up beside me and we just sat while it shaked. Id love to know what this is.

rainbowstardrops · 03/01/2019 21:01

Bloody hell, this sounds freaky!
I often 'hear' noises/bangs/knocks on the door etc that wake me up. They scare the shit out of me too

Troels · 03/01/2019 21:02

I get that sometimes, only it's accompanied by someone shouting my name. It's sleep paralysis so I'm told. It totally throws me for a loop.

wishywashy6 · 03/01/2019 21:09

So weird you've posted this as something similar happened to me last night and I've never experienced it before, it terrified me!
I woke up feeling that someone/ something was on me in bed. Not heavy, a bit like a cat walking over me if that makes sense (I don't have a cat!) or someone pushing gently on me. I kind of half woke and saw a black shadow above me but as soon as I properly came round everything was back to normal.
It really gave me the goosebumps!
No idea what it was but I didn't enjoy it!

MutantDisco · 03/01/2019 21:10

Sleep paralysis. Google it.

It's plagued me all my life and it's frightening.

oakthorn · 03/01/2019 21:13

We live close to a railway line and the stone trains going to the local power station shake the house like an earthquake. Rail not visible or noticeable from house

Sallygoroundthemoon · 03/01/2019 21:57

Totally not sleep paralysis. I was wide awake. I'm a rediculously light sleeper and I know the difference.

Rhubarbisevil · 03/01/2019 22:01

Definitely ghosts 😱🕺🏻🧛🏻‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧙‍♂️👻

DontCallMeCharlotte · 03/01/2019 22:56

Out of body experience? Happens just as I'm dropping off but feels like I'm wide awake. I used to get them frequently and the sensation is extremely physical, almost sexual. Sometimes it feels like I'm fighting something but when I wake/come to, I clearly haven't moved a muscle. Now I only get them in my own bed if the radio isn't on.

HundredMileStare · 03/01/2019 23:09

Sounds really strange op and not like the sleep paralysis I've experienced- although granted I realise it must take different forms.

I get the one where I feel like something is sitting on my chest, I'm awake but I can't move a muscle. It's horrible.

I also get this thing sometimes where it's like I hear a train rattling past me, horrendously loud and I feel like I'm awake but I can't be.

And then the typical "night terrors" where you keep dozing in and out of sleep and wake up feeling absolutely terrified, you try to stay awake to get over it but you can't fight drifting off again so the cycle continues.

If I got this too I think I'd lose the plot Sad

Redcrayonisthebest · 03/01/2019 23:20

Sleep paralysis.... I get auditory hallucinations and they are very, very realistic.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 04/01/2019 07:50

How can it be sleep paralysis when I'm awake and consiously, clearly able to move on the bed?
