Ok, we've reached critical-mass, tell me how to clean my oven...

I can't open the oven door when it's working, I suspect, because of the amount of stuff that's stuck to the ceiling inside. It sends a cloud of smoke up which sets the fire alarms off. I think it's to do with a roast I made recently. I've never cleaned the whole oven before, just a cursory wipe over the glass I really don't want to fork out for someone professional to do it although the idea appeals immensely. So what are your top MN tips to do the job quickly & easily?

(I tried the dishwasher cube thing once but it scratched the internal glass so I won't be doing that again.)

One of my ovens got like yours OP. Eye level one.

I was about it as i'm houseproud with everything else.

I arranged for a professional to come and do it. ''He'll bring a magic cleaning gizmo and i'll be amazed'', i thought. ''He'll have seen worse''. £40.

He arrived. He asked to borrow a dinning room chair. ''Wow'' i thought ''where's the magic gizmo and how is my wooden chair going to feature? ... ''.

He rolled up his sleeves, sat on the chair and just scrubbed, and scrubbed and scrubbed with soap and elbow grease to get all the shite off my oven ... for 2 hours !!

I have never felt so ashamed and embarrassed in my life! I didn't know where to put myself while he worked so hard to clean up my laziness.

goingtotown same here in our new house. Chap said he reckoned it had never been cleaned, was absolutely disgusting.
