What to do with teen ds

Background
I have a chronic illness that stops me from doing anything very physical. I can walk for a while in a town centre/flat countryside but that’s about it.
Ds is VERY outdoorsy and would spend all his days doing that sort of activities if he could. He has a hobby (shared with H and Dc2) along those lines and is spending every weekend doing that. A hobby I can’t join in.

My new year resolution is to engineer situations so I can spend more time with ds as I end up hardly seeing him, let alone spending some nice quality time with him.
But I’m stuck at what a teenage boy would enjoy doing with his mum. Any ideas??

Cinema? There have been some good films out recently.

Eating!
My teenage DS will go anywhere with me if it involves food!
Sometimes we just go for coffee and cake or sometimes for a proper meal, places like Wagamama or Pizza Express.
Die he like films op? Maybe a movie night in or a trip to the cinema to see the latest film?

With a view to the future - how about working through a basic cookery book together. Eg How to cook (Delia)?

Do you play cards? Learning a few games is great fun. Monarchs, Shit head, whist or crib.

Do you drive? And how does he get to school? Would it work for you to start driving him to or from school some days? I have good chats with my teen while driving.

How about at bedtime? He may be too old for a bedtime story but you could get in the habit of popping into his room every night for a quick chat to see how his day was.

I play video games with mine.
Or he shows me YouTube videos he thinks will interest me.

my husband used to go sailing as a teen but no idea how physical everyone has to be

Food is certainly working! I have a plan to go to a cafe with him. Restaurant could be an idea too. I just need to organise it so it doesn’t look like I’m excluding Dc2 or H.

Cinema is one thing we can do. Hard to talk to each other when you arectyere but it would give us something to talk about that is just ours.

I hate board games etc... with a passion!
But I like the idea of cooking together. (Not sure if he will. I suspect he sees that as a chore!)

Could you take him to a golf driving range? I take my son once a month but don't join in, he gets to do something, I get to talk to him.
We also go to Costa once a month for hot chocolate and cake.

Peachbubble · 03/01/2019 08:39

Bowling? You can sit down whilst he takes most of your turns too.

That’s an idea as long as I don’t end up winning thanks to his turns! 😂

Agree with the others, driving is a good opportunity, I take mine to football training twice a week, 20 mins drive away, we also cook together and he will come to the supermarket with me. I also take him to occasional football matches (professional, not his own) but I've been going all my adult life and appreciate it might be intimidating for a novice or there might not be a club nearby.

Beechview · 03/01/2019 08:48

How about a picnic if there are nice places nearby? That way you get out without having to do too much.

Movie night or get into a box set with popcorn and sweets.

I have no issue with driving but

  • dcs go to school walking so no driving involved
  • driving him to his hobby is done by H (as they share said hobby). There is no point me going with them as the whole time is spent talking about the hobby with each other (H, dc1 and Dc2) whilst I’m just being a spare part.

A few years ago, ds1 was swimming a lot. The 20 mins drive was an excellent way to be able to spend time together.

Could you take up geocaching? It can often involve driving around an area with just a short walk in outdoorsy places once you have parked close to a location (while you sit warm an comfortable in the car)
