Center Parcs Elveden

Just about to book a week at Elveden CP in July. Me, dh and 2 dc age 5 and 3. We've never stayed there before and wondering if anyone who has been thinks it's worth paying the extra to reserve a lodge in a specific area or to just leave it to CP to allocate? And if yes, which area? Any advice appreciated!

Bring lots of lube!

cestlavielife · 02/01/2019 23:04

You might end up being allocated the furthest away which could be 15 minute walk to and from the pool with your swimming gear and tired 3 year old.......but that might not be an issue for you. Have a look at the map.

cestlavielife · 02/01/2019 23:06

Work out If you happy cycling more than 5 to 10 minutes to and from pool and know your three year old can manage doing this after a session in pool... or if it would be better to have a shorter ride/walk.

It depends on how you plan to get about.

We tend to pay extra to select a lodge in a central area (better to pick exactly the one you want than just pay for a vague area). It means we can pop back quickly.

When we first went to CP DD2 was a baby and we allowed CP to allocate a lodge. It was 15 min walk from the pool and every time we set off for a swim she fell asleep in the buggy on the way. It was also a bit of a trek each time we will wanted to go for a meal.

If you're all set to cycle around then being near the middle isn't as important.

We always choose our lodge when booking. My advice would be to look in the Pine area (bottom left of the map) and then choose a lodge that's next to a walkway.

We don't hire bikes when there and the cost of a closer lodge is MUCH cheaper than family bike hire.

It's been a while since Eleveden, but we go to CP every year. We always choose a lodge, using the map to look for an off-thorough-fare spot within easy cycling distance to the village sq. Elveden is pretty flat, and you can get bikes with trailers to cart smaller offspring about easily enough.

Although not Elvedon, we go to Longleat quite a lot (going tomorrow!), and I've never pre-booked accommodation. I think Longleat is more spread out than the others, so we have been i the back of beyond, but it's always been quite nice to cycle around anyway (or the kids to scoot when younger), or to get the little land train, or even have a nice walk.

I found the newer style accommodation tends to be more central, and we usually book an Executive lodge, again tends to be more central.

We always take our own bikes though, rather than rentals.

I went to Center Parcs at Elveden the year it opened! That's showing me age :-). I had a small son, my mum came up for a few days.

It is a lovely part of the world. We just had an ordinary cabin but it was very good, well equipped and comfy.

Obviously I'm not up to date with Center Parcs, other people may be. I chose it because I wanted the unique swimming pool experience (at that time, it was unique! Not now), plus having many facilities on site.

The surroundings were beautiful, I love East Anglia anyway. Elvedon is well positioned to go out and see other places but of course, if you choose Center Parcs with kids, you want everything on doorstep.

What was funny was that there was a fire in the swimming pool :-). You couldn't make it up. I remember writing postcards and telling people about it, someone said that if I insisted on holidaying in a high tech greenhouse I had no-one to blame but myself. There was an announcement and everyone had to evacuate the pool. Of course we went back later.

My young son hired a bicycle, or we hired it for him, and he wobbled all over the village, enjoying himself.

The restaurants were very, very expensive. At that time, we didn't have much spare money. I remember on our first evening I took small son to a pancake restaurant which was lovely but cost an arm and a leg. So we had to be careful and did some basic cooking in our chalet.

Chalet had a jacuzzi which my boy liked, a room full of bubbles!

There were certainly plenty of facilities and fun things to do but they all cost extra.

When we left, though we thought it was a good place, we had no plans to go back because it was so expensive. However, CenterParcs have changed a lot since then and I would certainly go back again, of course I can afford more now but they've long got over their teething problems. I would treat my now grown up son, girlfriend etc, to a short break there.

Everything was of a very high standard. However, after that, we had holidays in Norfolk, renting a cottage, and enjoyed just as much in a different way.

EmmaStone, I love Longleat! One of the best places I've visited when holidaying in the UK. What a wonderful place! It's beautiful and so interesting. I adore all sorts of animals. Plus the fact is if you are staying in the area, it's really nice.

My plan is to go to Chester Zoo this year (having watched 'Secret Life of the Zoo' and admiring the Chester ethos), so will hopefully stay somewhere near there for a few days.

Givemestrength, I hope you will have a great time at Elvedon CenterParcs, it's a unique place in a simply gorgeous area. Let us know how you enjoy.

You'll have a lovely time.
We always have a nice time at Elvedon. DD (4yo) is always absolutely shattered after being in the pool all afternoon. We usually stay in the Pine or Birch area. As PP said, it's good if you can get a lodge near the walkway so you can get to/from the centre quickly. I would like to stay closer if I could but the lodges close by are expensive. Enjoy your trip !!

Thanks so much everyone for all these tips and suggestions! Very much appreciated.

Oh you'll love it. We went for the first time last year and have rebooked for this summer. We stay in the exec lodges so are a 5 min cycle from the pool. If you got placed at the very back it's quite a walk or a 15 min cycle so depends how you feel about that. Such a great holiday. Don't book too many activities is my advice as you'll have fun doing the free stuff and we felt like there wasn't enough time as we booked 2 things every day. I love the pool so will spend much more time there this year. Could spend all day on the rapids!

I must be honest, been there multiple times but never booked a specific lodge!

I recommend this map: www.centerparcs.co.uk/content/dam/centerparcs/maps/download-map/Elveden-Forest-Village-Map.pdf

Take a look as it shows exactly what type of villa is where. So for example if you’re booking an executive style they are generally in the inner ring anyway.

If however you are in the cheapest (woodland lodge - all I’ve ever done and they are absolutely fine IMHO) then you could end up bottom corner of central. Tbh the outer ring is more peaceful and you get more wildlife. If you want to have ample opportunity to feed the ducks then go for one by water. That might actually be the cheapest form of entertainment for your dc as it is a sweet thing to do!

Toomuchgoingon · 05/01/2019 18:23

At Elveden we've always let them allocate us as it's fairly small and flat. I'd never take that risk at Longleat though
