Think DS has scoliosis. Please help me not to panic

DS is 12. I've thought for a while that one of his shoulders is higher than the other. The GP looked a couple of years ago and said it was just "one of those things". It looked postural. So I ignored it.
This evening, I asked him to do the bending over scoliosis test, and he's definitely uneven (albeit not dramatically so). I'll make him a GP appointment next week, but just need a hand hold. I know it's not the end of the world, but sport is absolutely his thing, and he's also quite anxious and scared of hospitals. Can anyone tell me some positive things/stories? Thank you x

I was finally diagnosed at 16 and had surgery at 21. Unfortunately multiple complications and delays led to my wait and the rods have greatly impacted my life, mostly for the better but there are significant challenges. I also had to have the surgical site reopened 10 days after the initial op, to flush a hospital acquired infection from the bone and metalwork. Not trying to scare you and I am a very rare collection of symptoms but things aren't without risk. If he's managing day to day then fingers crossed he'll be fine. Thanks

Hi. I was diagnosed at 18 after years of mythering my gp about bad back.
Im now 30 and have been a professional surfer 5 years.
With physio taken seriously hopefully any ops can be prevented. He might be able to even rectify it with a night brace, was too late for me

Thank you all so much for these very encouraging and informative posts. Each one is so helpful, and I'm going over them all repeatedly.

bizzey - big hand hold for you, too.

I was diagnosed at about 19. Like a pp, it was because my back had been giving me a lot of grief. After being told by a GP that 'girls if my age don't have bad backs' Hmm , a fantastic physio sorted me out.

Yes , my lower back can be sore but that can happen to anyone. I've done Pilates for years and keeping active in general keeps the niggles at bay.

Other than that, apart from one hip and one shoulder being slightly higher (and only if you really look hard), no one would ever know.

My ds1 is 12 and has just been diagnosed with a very mild 11 degree curve. One shoulder is higher than the other, his hips are uneven and he's slightly asymmetrical when doing the forward bend test.

At the moment, the consultant wants to work out whether his leg lengths are uneven or whether there are any hip issues causing the curve or whether the curve is causing his hips to be out of line so we're going back in April for more x-rays on legs, hips and spine.

Chances are it will remain stable but they're going to keep an eye on it for a while.

@FixTheBone I realised after I wrote that comment that I would think that as we just don't see the kids that don't have surgery!

Ds has a 'lump' on one side when he bends over. One shoulder is higher than the other and a physio noted that.
We does have issues with his hips though. An x Ray showed pistol grip femoral head.

Here’s a video of my daughter sailing 9 months post spinal surgery. She had also been skiing 3 months post op and did grade 7 RAD ballet that summer & grade 8 the following year (not a stealth boast! Just trying to reassure that if surgery is required, it’s not the end of the world). Happy to take PMs from any lurkers looking for reassurance x

She’s the blonde, btw.
