Dogs and poo and public areas. Why isn't this practice questioned more?

Just returned from a walk (with dc, no dogs as I don't have one) and started to think about how extraordinary it is that people take dogs on walks in public parks and green spaces specifically to give them the opportunity to poo!!

Why isn't this practice questioned more by the community? Surely dog owners are the minority so why aren't communities discussing this and requiring dog owners to change their behaviour and encourage dogs to poo at home.

This is especially an issue in cities where green grass and space are limited. Even if dog owners scoop up the poo there would be remnants on the grass where unsuspecting picnickers sit and children play upon.

I get the impression jamieoliver may not be all that keen on dogs? Hmm

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/01/2019 13:43

Leaveby it is the smell of dog that is horrible. My smell is not acute but as a dog owner you probably don't notice the dog smell but as a non dog owner I will. To me it is stinkier than some smokers.

Every dog smells differently, they all have their own unique smell.
Some smell more, some less, others don't smell at all. It depends on many factors, sex, age, season, weather, food, whether they are neutered or not. They all smell different though.
And so does dog shit.

I'm pretty much the missing link between the human and the bloodhound, and I there are so many offensive smells I encounter every day, for example stale fried food, old cigarette smoke, most perfumes, sweaty armpits and constipated people, dogs are not even in the top ten .

Nah, they protest too much, I'm sure they are planning a puppy or two this Summer.

This would help with the scooping/remnants situation. There are others available.

Soubriquet · 03/01/2019 14:26

I think my dogs would throw themselves over a cliff if I made them wear that!

I get enough trouble trying to put a coat on little shit!

SoyDora · 03/01/2019 14:39

Soubriquet i think jamieoliver would consider that a good result!

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 03/01/2019 16:53

Just got back from a park walk with the DCs. Guess what?
Yes I left the pair of trainers there then had to clean inside the car with alcohol handwash.
I suppose the doggy people are proud of this and find it hilarious

Soubriquet · 03/01/2019 16:55

Oh yes I find it absolutely hilarious Hmm

SoyDora · 03/01/2019 16:56

Gosh JamieOliver you really do live in an awful area.

tinstar · 03/01/2019 16:59

Karma's a bitch JamieOliver.

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 03/01/2019 17:05

I dropped off my son with his friend and her mum said last week they were there, her 7 year old picked up what she thought was a stick and it was dog shit. There were bags of shit hung from the trees, dog shit on the paths, and bags of dog shit in the normal bins.
On the way into my drive there is a grass verge with two big piles of dog shit. I used to put my bins there fore collection but don't.
I also think dogs smell the shit of other dogs and are inclined to shit in those areas. Certainly cats do it.
The new neighbour behind chopped down every tree in the no mans land between our gardens because he didn't want any leaf dropping, and then concreted the whole garden and made a massive cage and ugly wood structure to house his three lurcher dogs. So that's the neighbour's privacy all gone, in our entire row, because of one dickhead making his dogs more important than the rest of us.
You go to our local park, there is a race track with football pitches, and round the other end a big field where people run the dogs around. You know not to picnic or let the kids on that bit. But you always, no matter when you're there, see some fucker with a dog off lead walking through the kids park. Every. single. time.
There is such a sense of entitlement by the owners that I think if people's dogs were permanently removed for such behaviour they might start to behave like normal humans.
Up the road is a woman who was widowed. She has 5 dogs, from wolf size to a little Jack Russell who is disabled and she pushes in a pram. Those animals are her everything, she picks up every bit of shit. Those people are so few and far between it's depressing. And makes people like me view all dogs as disgusting and all owners as dickheads-even though they aren't.

MakeAHouseAHome · 03/01/2019 17:07

Bloody hell there are some right whack jobs on here!!

Would rather ban leople from having shitty bratty children any day than them be banned from having dogs.

So sick of the entitlement of some fecking humans who think them and their darling snotty nosed brats are the centre of the universe and come before people with dogs. Newsflash. You don't. Dogs are allowed in public spaces and have as much right to be there as you.

ADastardlyThing · 03/01/2019 17:07

Not hilarious at all that's really grim, sounds like a horrible area to live, it's literally been years since I stood in dog shit. Were you the one with the neighbour who couldn't get out of her garden too because it was all piled up blocking her way out?

Why leave your trainers though? Terribly wasteful. I'd have just given the soles a squirt of bleach/anti bac cleaner left it to soak for a bit and rinsed off.

SignOnTheWindow · 03/01/2019 17:07

JamieOliver I agree.

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 03/01/2019 17:07

And actually I live in a beautiful city, it's not some deprived inner city suburb. It's wealthy and very middle class (not that we are). Perhaps that feed the entitlement, I don't know.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/01/2019 17:08

Your neighbour is a twat.

SoyDora · 03/01/2019 17:09

Ok. It’s just not something I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve lived in a lot of cities/towns/villages.

ADastardlyThing · 03/01/2019 17:10

I do live in a deprived inner city suburb and stuff like that never happens. Gosh, how awful for you :(

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 03/01/2019 17:14

Yes Dastardly that was my next door neighbour.
The trainers were old, my toddlers, deliberately so. Didn't realise until I got him in the car.
I can't stomach the smell enough to get near them to clean. I'd probably have left them brand new tbh, I'd never want to wear them again.
We all take our shoes off at home. I'd never do that if it weren't for dogs.
Would rather ban leople from having shitty bratty children any day than them be banned from having dogs
Thing is, you were a bratty child.
It is human nature to procreate. And as far as I'm aware, children don't stand shitting on pavements or barging into people trying to eat, or sniff people and try to lick them.
You can criticise children's behaviour, but not their existence because that's normal. Keeping an unnaturally bred wolf descendent is not. You won't ruin your shoes because of my children. They won't come and slobber over your picnic. They won't sniff you, or piss up your lamp posts.
Actually none of mine are snotty either. Either way their snot wouldn't come anywhere near you. You sound like you've got serious issues if you can't cope with people.
And actually, public areas are created by humans, for humans. Dogs aren't naturally occurring creatures, so wouldn't go there if it weren't for humans insisting on breeding them. So bar guide dogs and disability dogs, no they don't have an automatic right to be there.

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 03/01/2019 17:16

Yes he is. Although he does look after the dogs well, they never bark and he cleans the dog shit up every day.
I actually think there's something wrong with him as a person, he is aggressive and doesn't communicate properly. I don't know what his wife sees in him tbh, he's very controlling.

ADastardlyThing · 03/01/2019 17:29

I just can't even imagine dog shit being piled so high it blocks someone from leaving their garden gate. That sounds like a targeted attack to me. Just awful. Hope the police are involved.

The history of dogs is quite interesting, as I said previous it's not thought that they are descendants from wolves at all even though they share some genes. Anyway, It must be galling to have something around that you can't stand (bit like how I feel about people who eat garlic!) but dogs won't ever be banned, I do wish feckless owners would be though. I dunno, I hope you find some way of dealing with it, Quite a few of us have said what you describe is in no way normal at all and sounds a thoroughly unpleasant area and if it affects you this deeply maybe consider a move if you can?

MakeAHouseAHome · 03/01/2019 17:31

@Jamie, please tell me where it says public areas are created for people and not dogs.....

And believe me, children inconvenience me FAR more in day to day life than any child. You dislike dogs, I dislike children. One has no more 'right' to be somewhere than the other unless there are specific signs. There are certain 'no dog' areas, just as there are slme 'adult only' spaces/activities etc.

MakeAHouseAHome · 03/01/2019 17:32

Sorry, that was meant to say more than any dog!

MakeAHouseAHome · 03/01/2019 17:34

And also, all the bad behaviour you have outlined that 'dogs' do, my dog doesn't because he has been trained/bought up correctly. All the 'natural' behaviour (i.e. poo) is cleared up by me.

So your supposed differentiation there as to why children are acceptable but dogs are not is null and void.

nicelyneurotic · 03/01/2019 17:47

I have often wondered this too. Future generations will look back and think how gross, like hundreds of year ago when people used to throw their own shit out of Windows onto the street!
