Dogs and poo and public areas. Why isn't this practice questioned more?

Just returned from a walk (with dc, no dogs as I don't have one) and started to think about how extraordinary it is that people take dogs on walks in public parks and green spaces specifically to give them the opportunity to poo!!

Why isn't this practice questioned more by the community? Surely dog owners are the minority so why aren't communities discussing this and requiring dog owners to change their behaviour and encourage dogs to poo at home.

This is especially an issue in cities where green grass and space are limited. Even if dog owners scoop up the poo there would be remnants on the grass where unsuspecting picnickers sit and children play upon.

What I see are dog owners loading the pack into the car, driving to the nearest beauty spot, letting them out to run about and shit and then driving them home again, this is a person who claims his dogs help him to get some exercise

cucumbergin · 04/01/2019 17:08

It would partly address the OPs concerns around public spaces being overly dog-focused rather than more fairly shared.

Wordthe · 04/01/2019 17:19

I dont want to share human public spaces with dogs, why do we have to have them inconveniencing, intimidating and attacking us and defecating all over the nice outdoor area's

you may see it as a fur-baby but to everyone else it is vermin

Wordthe proposes idea
I provide a set of reasons why it doesn't work for many dogs
Wordthe decides to plough on regardless of the evidence because they don't like dogs

It's like arguing with someone who thinks no deal brexit is the best thing that could happen to this country because they don't like foreigners 🙄

"why should the rest of us have to put up with these weird messed up creatures and their complex and ever increasing requirements"

Grin Grin Grin - really enjoying the irony (and yes it did bring a smile to my face - so thanks for that) because imo the weird messed up creatures aren't the dogs or their owners on this thread Wordthe, but rather the dog phobic naysayers

Wordthe · 04/01/2019 17:29

a dog park is a place where all the dogs can be concentrated so that the rest of us can be free of them, no?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/01/2019 17:34

I never thought it was possible to hate something so much... And then I joined MN and came across a dog thread.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/01/2019 17:35

I think WordThe has a thing for dog shit, seems to rock up on dog shit thread going on MN.

Wordthe let it go!!!!! Hopefully you are returning to work soon jeez so much hatredHmm

Dog shit not picked up is bad, but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be before laws were introduced. I'm old enough to remember this time. I just think there are more dogs now, (8 million has been quoted), which increases the probability that there will be some owners who don't remove it. A few people have mentioned owners who, specifically, take their animals to defecate in a certain area, then put them back in their cars or go back to their houses. I've also witnessed this. The phrase 'entitled dog owners' has some resonance, not necessarily because of the dog shit issue, but because dog owners now seem to be multiple dog owners (everyone now seems to have 2 or 3) and just think they can take them everywhere. They waltz into shops, cafes etc. and all sorts of places where it wasn't acceptable before. It's difficult to find hotels that don't allow them. The camping/caravan site behind us, in a rural village that normally is only 90 people, at any one time in the summer, has about 600 dogs on it, which make the summer months, for us, a hell of yapping dogs 24 hours a day.

That is the true hell of dogs. The sheer number of them!

Elfinablender · 04/01/2019 18:07

Is it too late to invent a disposable dog nappy? No doubt someone's got there first. If not, I reckon I could get one of the Dragons on board.

Elfinablender · 04/01/2019 18:08

Ah feck, apparently you can get them and they are even stocked in Asda. I'm going to need a usp.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/01/2019 18:14

You can get washable dog pants too, how eco! Elf Grin

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 18:15

Problem is some of us don't really give one whether it benefits dogs. There really should be some sort of law where dogs are registered to addresses (if they are to be given the status dog owners wish them to have) and if any kind of bad behaviour occurs, the dog be removed permanently into a pen. Obviously those which aren't dangerous cannot and should not be put down, but they should be kept apart from their owners who will not care for them properly.
The psychological wellbeing of someone's dog, who they have chosen to unnaturally raise and subject on the world, really isn't of my concern. It's laughable that we should consider this when trying to plan for a dog shit free world.

Elfinablender · 04/01/2019 18:16

Washable dog pants Imagine that going around the washing machine? Maybe I could invest curtains to hide the washing machine window.

Elfinablender · 04/01/2019 18:20

And apparently there are already washing machine curtains and they have been around forever. This is why I will never be rich

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 18:22

OMFG at those washable dog pants-they'll be forcing the dog shit on us via the launderette machines next Shock

Wordthe · 04/01/2019 18:26

dog owners now seem to be multiple dog owners (everyone now seems to have 2 or 3) and just think they can take them everywhere

in the owners mind it is a family member and therefore has the same right to happiness and enjoyment that a human does

therefore it has a right to do whatever floats it's boat

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 18:31

Agree word.
They'll be having their own seats on aeroplanes next.
Even if you go to Haven you can only have a dog in the skanky basic caravans.

Sarcelle · 04/01/2019 18:33

I commute into London Victoria and I walk for a further 20 minutes to work through back streets. I see a lot of dog walkers. I also see a lot of dog poo on the pavement, or more bizarrely lots of poo bags on the pavement. So they have picked it up and despite there being many bins, they just throw the bag on the floor, job done. It's infuriating. I love dogs, they have to poo, but some of the owners are anti social and selfish.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/01/2019 18:34

.....when trying to plan for a dog shit free world.

Grin HmmConfused

Just when you think you've heard it al...

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 18:37

Perhaps you just can't imagine such a refreshing reality, or the fact that some people would welcome that, you know, having to pick up all of that poo makes you lose perspective on what's normal and not.

curiositycreature · 04/01/2019 18:38

70sbaubles there technically is a law... dogs have to be legally microchipped now and that microchip has to have an address. (Yes, people might not change that address but the law says they HAVE to so not much more can be done there I don’t think?)

Ylvamoon · 04/01/2019 18:39

Don't forget to moan about bird shit, cat shit and rabbit shit! Oh and did I mention fox shit and horse shit? Not to forget all that human shit... like sweet wrappers, chewing gum and the ice cream sticks in summer. Oh and the cigarette buds! Pretty disgusting! At least common shit rotts away.
