Taking fake babies out- is this a thing?

Went to a local country park yesterday. There were around 6 really beautiful old silver cross prams being pushed by people (probably aged 40-50). Some were single women, some were m/f couples. As they walked past, I noticed that the babies in the prams weren't real.
Is this a hobby that people have? Does this activity have a name, big community of followers etc?

As someone who lost their first baby there is no way I’d use a reborn doll to fill that void, and of the bereaved parents I know, I can’t think of any who’d do the same. However each to their own.

I think it’s more common for people who had maybe never found someone to have a child with, or who have an empty nest. Plenty of cash, time and effort available, to do a grown up version of playing dollies.

The documentary I watched had a DGM who’d looked after her DGS as a baby while his mum (their DD) was going through cancer treatment. Thankfully the DD recovered and they left with their DS to start a new life abroad. The DGM got a doll commissioned to be identical to the grandson as a newborn, so she’d get to keep him with her. No mention of her being pleased her DD was healthy, it was just about her ‘taking her DS away’ from her...made me a bit sick.

I was in Clark's once abscond saw a slightly odd looking baby in a pushchair that you wouldn't put a new born in. Decided it must have been premature then realised it was a doll. The lady was in her 60's.
