2 year old with chicken pox worry

My DS has caught chicken pox from his older brother. He seems to be coping okay with the spots, but he has a high temperature that his making him a bit miserable and sleepy. Although his hands feel nice and warm his feet are icy cold. This seems a bit odd and doesn’t normally happen when he has a temp. Is this normal for chicken pox?

Hi i think this is ok as im sure cold hands and feet are part of a temp, but if his feet turn blue or change colour then id contact nhs 24 or if your worried in any way then call them as its always best to be safe.keep an eye on his temp as if u cant get that down then id contact them.

My DS was like that when he had a chest infection, chatting to his nursery when I picked him up as they had stripped him down to his joggers because of this. They said it’s signs of a high temp / fever. Body warm and hands / feet cold.

Does he have a temp?

NewYearsSleeve · 01/01/2019 20:29

Yes his temp is 39. I scared myself googling because all I could find was stuff relating to meningitis.

No, it isn’t normal to have cold hands and feet with a fever. My children always have extremities as hot as the rest of them when they’re feverish.

NHS advice is to consider cold extremities a red flag, so I’d call 111 if I were you.

ARandomPoster · 01/01/2019 20:36

Agree with calling 111. It's highly probable that his feet are simply cold, but a temperature with cold extremities in a small child is not generally normal and is definitely a good idea to seek proper medical advice.

sycamore54321 · 01/01/2019 20:42

Please ring the NHS advice line. Cold extremities with a fever can be a sign of sepsis where every minute counts. I don’t mean to scare you as it’s quite possibly not as serious as this but posters online have no way of knowing. You need to ask for professional help, not be reassured by online anecdotes. Chicken pox can have serious complications. Please call for advice or bring him to be seen now.

Thank you, his feet seemed to have warmed up now he’s in bed asleep but will keep an eye on them and if they go cold again/ anything else doesn’t seem right I will get him checked over.

So my sons temp is still high. His feet and hands normal though and Calpol does bring temp down. He is in a lot of pain though. Barley slept all night. Is screaming “ow”. Has chickenpox everywhere. Ears and eyelids and mouth. Given Calpol, Pirotin, oat baths, virasoothe - is there anything else I can do? It’s awful Sad

It's horrid. I'm the midst myself and doing all you are. I'm very worried my newborn will catch it. DS has been throughly miserable. We did all you did. I added bicarbonate of soda to the bath as well and feel this helped the spots a bit but could just be conicidnece.

Truly miserable time and the lack of sleep doesn't help at all. Poor mites.
