Electric toothbrush recommendations - are the expensive ones worth the extra?

cananybodyfindmesomeonetolove · 01/01/2019 18:56

I'm looking to buy an electric toothbrush for my family (two adults and two children aged 8 & 11) and any thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated Smile. They seem to range in price from £15 - £90+. I would rather not spend more than we need to, and am not bothered about extra things like phone holders Confused that some have, but I do want to make sure it cleans our teeth well.

We all have the fairly basic Oral B ones and they're absolutely fine. Dd and ds have junior ones but the regular heads fit them which makes it easier and more economical as we can buy multipacks when they're on offer.

Vinorosso74 · 01/01/2019 22:38

We all have Oral B ones here. DD has a kids version, DP and I the Pro 2000.
This was recommended by the dental hygienist who said not to pay more than £35 as it's always on offer somewhere.I got ours from Boots a couple of months back.

ShortandSweet96 · 01/01/2019 22:41

Anything from the Oral B Pro 2 (2000) upwards, all models upward from that one are exactly the same.
I've just bought the £300 genius 9000.. only because I got it in lilac and can change the colour at the top of the brush.. poor excuse I know.

Just as long as it has the motor of the pro 2(2000) then it's plenty good enough, your only then paying for bluetooth and fancy gadets

Hmm my dentist recommended Phillips sonicare. Mine cost £35 and lasted over 3 years. Just bought another one.

VeganCow · 02/01/2019 14:58

Ive bought us all the battery oralb from amazon, 6.99. You just replace the batteries rather than recharge them so great if you dont have a socket in the bathroom. Its apparently the exact same toothbrush as the expensive ones.

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/01/2019 15:03

I think they're definitely something where all the bells and whistles are pointless novelties and the basic model is fine.

Also take all the offers and discounts with a pinch of salt, as you would be a fool to pay the claimed 'full price', eg £300 toothbrush on offer for £80. Hmm

I've got an oral b pro something - think it was about £15 ... liked the idea of recharging it & as I didn't have a shaver socket in he bathroom just bought a plug adaptor so can charge it at a normal plug socket

Phalarope · 02/01/2019 15:16

I loathe our oral B ones - they have a tiny hole near the brush that seems to collect minty toothpaste dribble and then slowly deposit it on the bathroom shelf in a vile puddle. (Basic) Sonicare ones we had before were much better.

Ethel80 · 02/01/2019 15:17

I've got a Phillips Sonicare too and really like it. My teeth feel much cleaner than when I had the basic oral B before.

I'd quite like the jet flossing one too but they're expensive.

redsummershoes · 02/01/2019 15:22

a basic oral b is fine. dc can use the normal brush heads or the softer children's ones.
buy brush heads in the sales, they are quite expensive.
we need a new one every 5 years or so, mainly because the docking station gives up it's ghost.

Lonegirl · 02/01/2019 15:27

Sonicare definitely. We’ve not had to use a hygienist since we got one. (So that’s a saving) they do kids ones too. Teeth feel amazing.

Notwiththeseknees · 02/01/2019 15:29

I love my Sonicare - been using the brand since it was first in Selfridge, many moons ago. Was once bought an Oral B as a replacement and did not like it at all. Bought another Sonicare within the week.

boomboomshakalack · 02/01/2019 15:44

Phillips sonicare with the flosser jet. I got it for Christmas and I am so so impressed! So much better than Oral-b...teeth feel clean and mouth feels healthy!

PoptartPoptart · 02/01/2019 16:06

£300 on a TOOTHBRUSH?? Shock

edwinbear · 02/01/2019 16:25

DH bought me that Oral B Genius 9000 thing with a phone holder, a travel case and allegedly Bluetooth. (Currently reduced from £300 to £80 on Amazon, presumably because nobody in their right mind spends £300 on a toothbrush).

I've not said this to him because I don't want to sound ungrateful, but wtaf does a toothbrush need Bluetooth for? I thought it might brush my teeth for me, whilst I slept (that would be worth £300), but it seems like a perfectly normal, run of the mill toothbrush so far.

Ticcinalong · 02/01/2019 16:32

Sonicare was a revolution after oral b. Much better clean, better battery, no disgusting hole. Love it!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 02/01/2019 16:48

What's the difference between the Phillips Sonicare cleancare+ and the diamond clean ???

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 02/01/2019 17:04

@edwinbear the bluetooth is to sync to the app you can download on your phone (which is also why it comes with a phone holder). The app replaced the smartguide widget that gave you a smiley face if you'd brushed properly. It does give you tips on whether you are using it right. Personally I don't use the app.
