Suppository for DS not worked

My DS age 4 has been very constipated, we've tried all the usual and today gave him a glyercin suppository. It was half an hour ago and nothing and he's been crying since saying his ear hurts??

What do I do? I'm worried I didn't put it in right - I inserted it but didn't push it up or anything. There's no way he'll let me do it again and he's very distressed. Help!

If he's crying and distressed then call 111 and ask? If it's not working he might need something else. I assume you've already tried things like prunes and orange juice etc.

I'm in Northern Ireland, we don't have 111 here.

Do you have ooh gp? I think you really need medical advice if it's at the point where a 4yo is crying and distressed.

Well, it's no wonder it's not working if you put it in his ear!!

Sorry...

Definitely ring 111 for advice, poor thing. Constipation is the pits.

You need to contact someone for some medical advice.
Any chemists open near you? A pharmacist may be able to help.

If not, OOH or walk-in clinic maybe? If he's very distressed it does need looking into.

I have a child with chronic constipation ,glycerine suppostories don't always work they are not that strong , is he eating and drinking? The advice I was given that if ds is not vomiting than he won't be admitted , take him to the gp.in the morning is he on any other oral medication?

Was he lying on the ear side over the last hours or when putting in the suppository?

Found the details of help is serious medical problems, they might give information, but otherwise refers to your local pharmacy

Thank you, I've called out of hours, waiting for them to call me back.

No, he wasn't lying on his ear. He did a very small hard poo there and that was it. He's not being sick but is very upset.

I feel terrible, he was very eager to have "medicine" to make him feel better, now he's crying saying he feels worse.

Supposed to be back at work tomorrow but there's no-one who can take care of him. My husband starts his first day at a new role tomorrow so can't take the time off.

Warm baths can help a little with constipation. Helps to relax the tense muscles. Not a magic cure all but may be a distraction if you have a bath.
