Crafty types - What can I do with 101 empty quality street ‘tins’

Okay maybe not 101 but certainly feels like we have loads after Christmas and I don’t want to send them to landfill. Anything interesting I can do with them?

Cover them in paper then use for storage? I would use decopatch paper and paint them white first so the colour/logo doesn’t show through. But I’m into decopatch so have stuff already. You could probably use any paper but I’d be tempted to seal with varnish if you did that.

My DC's secondary school is always asking for similar for the cookery dept. So many pupils forget to bring a suitable container to take stuff home and never return boxes that they borrow.

The plastic "tins"? Think they can go into recycling

They are recyclable, so they wouldn't be in landfill, would they?

Lwmommy · 01/01/2019 12:32

If you have kids you can use them for lego sets, cut down a base mat to fit the inside of the lid and stick it in using a gun then fill the tub with lego. Useful as a portable set for days at families house.

Keep as cake tins

General storage of small stuff, you can wrap them in sticky back plastic to make them more attractive, or to fit a colour scheme.

converseandjeans · 01/01/2019 12:32

Take them to a secondary school food tech dept.

Lwmommy · 01/01/2019 12:33

That should say 'glue gun' not just 'gun'

LokiDokiArtichoki · 01/01/2019 12:33

Biscuit tin, sewing box, craft storage

scrappydappydoo · 01/01/2019 12:36

Not able to recycle them here - council are rubbish (sorry) at recycling plastic.
Food tech department is a good idea.
thehatofdoom what kind of paint is best to use on plastic?

Our local council sent round a info leaflet the other day saying they can't recycle them! And they suggested using them for storage.

3out · 01/01/2019 12:41

If you had 101 then I’d have started building an ‘igloo’.
Planters for little spring flower displays? Crocuses and the like?

percypeppers · 01/01/2019 12:42

Stick them on Freecycle? I'm sure someone would want them for storage.

tutorwho · 01/01/2019 12:45

I had this video come up on my Youtube feed -

I agree with those who suggested local schools.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 01/01/2019 12:47

Please can I reiterate food tech dept at your local secondary school? We always have kids who forget to bring a container and Christmas choc tins/tubs have saved many a cupcake/spag bol/fruit salad!

nottakingthisanymore · 01/01/2019 13:14

Another one saying send them to secondary school. They are ALWAYS needed.
