How do part time hours work?

Im looking at applying for a job that is 18 hours a week. Would I be at work for 20 hours or do you add on lunch breaks too? Do I need to add on 1/2 hour a day for lunch? I'm trying to figure out how much childcare I would need.

Does it specify the number of days? You can do 6 hours without a break so in theory it could be 6 hours x 3 days with no lunch. Depends on the job / times you're required. If the entire place shuts down from 12-1 then chances are you'll be expected to take an hour lunch with everyone else.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 31/12/2018 20:22

It depends how many days you are working. 18 hours over 3 days would be 6 hours a day- no lunch necessary. Over 2 it would probably be 10 hour days with an hour for lunch

No one can answer that without knowing more details. How many hours per day and how many days per week?

2x 9 hour shifts per week would usually mean a 30 min break and one or two 15min breaks, or one full hour break. So physically at work for 10 hours per day.

3x 6h shifts would just usually have a 15-20 min break so 6h20m at work.

6x 3 hour days no breaks.

Dont forget to add commute time plus a contingency onto any childcare booked too.

Oldraver · 31/12/2018 20:24

Well depends on how the hours are split.

I believe up to 5 (or maybe 6) hours a day can be worked without a break. I do 5 hours a day and get 15 mins break within that 5 hours, though my employers dont have to.

If I work for an supposedly extra hour, I have a 30 minute break which isnt paid for

Rainyshowers · 31/12/2018 20:24

Sorry I meant would I be at work for 18 hours or would I be at work for longer to add on breaks?

No one can tell you that without knowing how many days those hours were split over.

ForeverBubblegum · 31/12/2018 20:25

Do you know how many days it's split over? If it's a few hours a day all week you probably won't, but if it's 2/3 long days then you would add a lunch break. I think you have to have a lunch break if your working more than 6 hours, but not sure if that's universal or just a policy from where I worked.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 31/12/2018 20:29

That depends as I said above

ForeverBubblegum · 31/12/2018 20:30

Just seen your updates, usually brakes are unpaid so would be in addition to the 18 hours.

E.g. if you work 9 hours but have 1 hour worth of brakes, then you would be in the building 10 hours.

Schmoobarb · 31/12/2018 20:32

You’ll need to ask them.

Rainyshowers · 31/12/2018 20:33

It would be over 3 days but may be two 7 hour days and one 5 hour day

Yes you will likely be at work for at least 19.5 hours.
It could be more: for example I have worked 17.5 hours, because of the shift patterns I actually have to be at work for 20 hours.

TulipsInbloom1 · 31/12/2018 20:37

Then you will probably be at work 7.5 hours on a 5 hour day and 5 hours on a 5 hour day. Check the procedure for start times with them. Some places like you "in and ready" at the time you start so people come in early to make drinks, get computer on, log into phone etc. Additionally you may end up staying uo to 15mins extra if a meeting over runs and you need to wait to a suitable point to leave, or if customer facing, to finish up with the customer you are dealing with.

TulipsInbloom1 · 31/12/2018 20:38

7.5 hours on a 7 hour day - sorry

LIZS · 31/12/2018 20:38

If you are working more than 6 hours in a day you need to factor in a statutory minimum half hour break.

PattiStanger · 31/12/2018 20:41

You need to ask the employer, no one here can tell you for sure. If it's a critical feature for you please don't rely on assuming it would be the same as some other workplace.

Bringbackthestrioes · 31/12/2018 20:43

I work part time but I get paid for my breaks so I am there for my contracted hours and no longer.
Depends on the company.
