Anyone with a DC who had reflux as a baby?

DS is 20 Months and suffered badly with reflux until around 12 months when it just disappeared... I’m guessing due to eating more solids and and stomach maturing.
However even now, he still seems to have a really sensitive stomach... if he overheats he’s sick or if he cries too much he’ll be sick. Many a time he’s throw a tantrum recently (terrible two’s on their way) and he’ll just throw up everywhere. I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing if their DC had reflux as a baby.

DS had horrific reflux until he was around a year old and the doctors told us he would always be a "sicky child". Luckily for us they were wrong and-touches wood- he is very rarely sick.

My 18 month old was very refluxy. Sick after every single feed for a long time. Still voms if too hot, either from environment/climate or fever. Haven't had it with tantrums (yet), but it really wouldn't surprise me. I'm still on edge after a big dinner and bottle even now, and he hasn't been sick for ages.

Baby girl on the way, and I have everything crossed she's not refluxy.

Hope your wee one grows out of it!

Yep.
Also coughing too much would result in vomit

My DS (19 months) had reflux. Stopped being sick around 15 months, but still has hiccups a few times a day (sometimes more). Whenever he is ill he will be sick. For example, he was teething he had lots of extra saliva, so he gagged and threw up everywhere. Or when he had a cold, the phlegm in his throat made him sick. And once when he cried lots when I was trying to clean his snotty nose he threw up.
But he hasn't been sick yet when he has had a tantrum.

My twins were really refluxy. I swear half of what went in cane out each time.

They stopped not long after weaning on to solids, and now that they're 8 they can eat anything and everything in vast quantities and never flinch.

Yes! DS had awful reflux and also had pyloric stenosis as a baby. Used to find wee puddles of sick everywhere he crawled! As a young child he would be sick if he overate or if he ate too late at night etc or was over excited and had quite a delicate tummy. He grew out of it. Can't remember when exactly but probably by age 4/5. He eats more than me now (he is 13).

ChelseaBabbage · 31/12/2018 19:04

Two here aged 21 and 23 Grin. Had awful reflux which lifted around a year old and never had any more digestive problems.

4 out of 5 of my children had reflux. My dc (number 3, now 16) also vomited regularly at night from over heating. His cot would be soaked with sweat and his bed as he grew older. It was as though his nappy has leaked everywhere but it hadn’t. He would literally projectile vomit in his sleep until I realised to keep his room really cool, ie fan, cotton sheets and window open.
He still to this day hates the heat and at home practically wonders around in boxers the whole time. He lived in shorts and t hurt as a young boy even when it was freezing.
If he got too hot playing, he would go as white as a sheet and all faint until we cooled him down.
His little brother, almost 3 lives in nappies, no other clothes and again sweats profusely at night. Within a minute of falling asleep he’s soaked. Hair stuck to his head as though I’ve dunked him. I just make sure he gets plenty to drink. Bizarrely both boys pee loads. You’d think they’d be more dehydrated.

DS2 had the devil's reflux... Grim times indeed until he was a year old or so. He was a bit more prone to puking when ill or coughing than DS1 had been until 2 or so, then absolutely fine. He's 6 now and I can only recall one occasion he's been sick in 3 or 4 years (thank god as I am emetophobic).

PottyPotterer · 31/12/2018 19:22

Yes mine has severe GERD until around 18 months and would vomit with 10 seconds of crying (think exorcist),hence I could never leave him to cry, he couldn't self settle and didn't sleep through the night until he was 2. He's 10 now and no problems past toddlerhood except he still has issues with food textures to some extent but his diet's generally pretty good and he will try new foods then gag.

Troels · 31/12/2018 19:23

Yes one of mine had reflux, he could shoot milk across the living room. He did get better by a year. I thought it was over, but too continued to vomit if he over ate. There were also certain foods that would make him vomit. Things like hot dogs, pop, junk food in general all came back up. It continued till he was about 8. As he was a healthy weight, none of the doctors seemed concerned at all.
It all started again at 13, he got a stomach bug, and after it was gone, the vomiting returned, the paediatric gastrologist didn't seem to know what was going on. It finally stopped and now he's fine he's 25 now
Another thing, he never burped, ever, as a baby. I couldn't wind him at all, but he's fart like a truck driver. He finally burped the first time ever and came running to tell me when he was 14 or 15, he said it was the weirdest feeing.

Mine both had reflux as babies. With DS1 the GP kept telling me the constant vomiting and lack of weight gain was “just one of those things”. He started walking at 9 months and being upright seemed to help. But around 18 months he got a cough that never went away and - as you describe, OP, he would vomit if he got too hot / stressed / upset / anything. DS2 was born and vomited loads as well- this time we had moved and had a new GP so I begged for help- got referred to hospital who said he had severe reflux, went on medication and special formula and it was sorted out. He was like a different child. All the while, DS1 still had his awful cough. During one of his suspected chest infections I had to keep him off nursery and had to take him along to his brother’s reflux clinic appt with me. He coughed in the doctor’s office and the specialist just said: “that’s a reflux cough”. He got referred for tests, was diagnosed with very severe reflux at aged 3.5 and started on medication. His non-existent appetite finally improved and he used to tell me he was hungry, which he never had before. He is now 5 and still cautious about what he eats but has a hearty appetite and is a decent weight for the first time in his life. This is all a long way of saying that yeah, vomiting and sensitivity is probably a reflux hangover but also it’s worth going back to the doctor if you’re at all worried. Good luck!

reallyanotherone · 31/12/2018 19:28

Mine was very refluxy. It finally eased about 18m.

He isn’t sicky generally. But does seem to still have an easily triggered upchuck reflex- if he eats something he doesn’t like or something sets off his gag reflex everything will come up again.

cece · 31/12/2018 19:30

My dd was like this and it seemed to ease off at 12 months.
She did go on to have several years of constipation problems. She's 17 now and fine now!

Whitelisbon · 31/12/2018 19:35

2 of my 4 had reflux.
1 is 16, and will still throw up at the drop of a hat. Too hot, too full, too much junk, crying, coughing, you name it. She's a healthy weight though, and it doesn't really bother her, so...
The other never ever vomits. I can count on one hand the amount of times he's vomited since about 18 months old.

mommathatwearspink · 31/12/2018 22:43

Thanks all Smile It’s good to know that it’s not uncommon! Hopefully he’ll grow out of it over the next couple of years!
