Are Argos sofas and armchairs rubbish?

We're looking for a snuggle armchair/small 2-seater sofa but I'm horrified by how much they're selling for in Next, M&S, John Lewis, DFS etc. There seems to be a couple of nice options in Argos for literally half the price of the ones I've seen in the other stores, but I'm worried they'll be poor quality. Any thoughts or experiences . . . ? Thanks!

Gosh I hope not - I just ordered a corner couch today! Admittedly, I wanted cheap as it's for the kid's playroom so not expecting to get much out of it and didn't want to spend too much when it will likely get trashed.

That said my sister has an Argos corner sofa and it's comfortable and hard wearing. That said she did pay to get the back cushions restuffed as they didn't hold their shape well.

FYI - I paid £42 for a 3 year warranty cover which includes accidental damage. I thought it was worth it given I've purchased for the playroom.

Absolutely not rubbish. I am sitting on my nearly 20 year old leather sofa that came from argos. I did have the seats releathered this year though. The rest is still perfect. It was a buy three seater get two seater free offer.

RedPandaFluff · 31/12/2018 18:24

Oh fingers crossed then, @penny14 😄

We don't really need it to be hardwearing, it's more to finish off a room (hence my reluctance to hand over the best part of £700).

Ooooo how much did you pay to get your sofa releathered, @RuthW? That's something I'm considering for our corner sofa - it's structurally perfect and the cushions are all fine, it's just that the blimmin' cats are using it as a scratching post, whilst totally ignoring their ACTUAL scratching posts (even shuffling them out of the way to get to the sofa 😒)

Furniture village has nice snuggles/loveseats. Have you looked there?

ScreamingValenta · 31/12/2018 18:42

I had a suite from there that lasted 15 years. It was still structurally OK when I got rid of it, but my then-puppy chewed holes in the covers so it had to go.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 31/12/2018 18:43

Not at all, they have some fab furniture, very comfy.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 31/12/2018 18:46

My 2 sofas are Argos and they've lasted really well; still comfy with food support even with 2 kids using the cushions for fort building and "trampolining". They also clean really well with an upholstery cleaner; no stains or running dye.

RuthW · 01/01/2019 01:35

Not sure how to tag the person who wanted to know but I paid £500 to have a three and two seater seats releathered and the rest polished and tarted up. It looks like new now.

Hoddykins · 01/01/2019 01:42

My mum's sofas from Argos are older than me (24) admittedly they've always been covered in throws, so the leather hasn't worn badly!

JovialNickname · 01/01/2019 09:20

I've just ordered and received a grey fabric recliner for my bedroom from Argos, and I bloody love it. It's so comfy and nice and looks like I spent far more than I did on it (£220). Highly recommend based on my experience!!

RedPandaFluff · 01/01/2019 10:15

Thanks everyone! I'm trying to convince DH but he's dubious; I need to find a showroom or something so he can see them.

Cheers @RuthW - it was me that was curious about re-leathering too 😁

We bought an Argos sofa for our first house, it was very comfy. After a year or so we noticed it had a tear under one of the seat pads, contacted Argos and they came and repaired it within a few weeks.

We only changed because we moved to a bigger house and needed a bigger sofa.

Nedzilla · 01/01/2019 10:26

Try Ikea, for the price, they are pretty good. My brother has had a white corner sofa from them for about 5 years, and the kids make it messy but the covers come off fully and wash in the machine so it still looks like new.

Gilead · 01/01/2019 10:59

We had a corner sofa for years, it was fabulous. Only changed because we moved but it went to ds and is still going.

onceandneveragain · 01/01/2019 11:54

I've got one and it's fine. I don't think they do any showrooms but they are good about returns - I bought a sofa and then tried to get the matching chair but when it arrived the colour was different, but they were fine about returning it, so you can always order it to see?

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 01/01/2019 11:57

I never thought I would say this but IKEA have some lovely sofas, really comfy and very reasonable. Another option maybe?

Jubarbrhubarb · 01/01/2019 11:58

Sofa sofa on line are also good and very reasonably priced..take a look

purplerainbows · 01/01/2019 12:00

We've had sofas from there before and they lasted well.

If you know what you want from Next, Marks etc try calling Trade Secret near Banbury - the sell over stocks and returns from loads of big name furniture places and prices are much cheaper.

It does depend on what they have so if your heart is set on a particular item there’s no guarantee they will get it (although they used to let you register what you wanted and would call if they got it in) but if you can be a bit more flexible it’s great if you can go and see what they have. Not sure how much they put online, it’s been a while since I needed to go.

I think there are other similar places around the country too.

Or try eBay - I needed an emergency sofa a few years ago having just moved and having lots of guests at Xmas that year. Ended up with a John Lewis suite, 2 years old, almost perfect condition, just one tiny patch of fading on the back of a chair (which is against the wall in my house so inconsequential) for £200 instead of several thousand. Originally I was going to resell when I had found my proper furniture - but it was so good we kept it and didn’t bother spending £££ on anything new! But again, type the names of things you are interested in, some great expensive brands go cheaply, and also do a search of things that are local to you - some great bargains to be had.

RoseLavenderBlue · 01/01/2019 16:22

I’ve had two Argos sofas over the years and they have been really good. It is a bit of a gamble when you can’t try them out for comfort, but with the first one I bought 18 years ago, Argos used to have sofas on display in larger stores so I went to a store and sat on them all and concluded that they were indeed all comfy, so ordered mine (a different one) which I had in my first house, and lasted me 11 years until I moved out and was really comfortable. Then the corner sofa bought 3 years ago, I went off the reviews that other purchasers had put online and was not disappointed. I’m sure it will be fine if you go ahead.

Longdistance · 01/01/2019 16:23

I bought a leather sofa and chair from them in 2001, when I bought my first house. We moved to Oz, and I gave the sofa away in 2013 as we were moving back, and there was nothing wrong with it, we just didn’t want to pay to put it in the container.

RedPandaFluff · 01/01/2019 18:17

Ooooo good tip, @rosablue, thank you.

Ikea is definitely a possibility, we'll have a look; but it does seem that most people have been pretty happy with their Argos purchases. Fab!
