Are New-Year's Day gifts a thing?

Just saw a request to help with ideas for children NY day's gift. I had never heard of that before. Is that a thing? Have I missed out all my childhood and equally depriving my kids?

If I have, I won't bother changing now Grin but just wondering if it's a common thing or as recent as the Christmas Eve boxes. I mean, not going back to times when people exchanged gifts on NY day instead of Christmas, more recently.

who, me toolazytothinkofausername? If you wish, why would it matter one way or another exactly?

We used to do this when I was growing up in South Wales. Something small, maybe a calendar or a book. We stopped, can't remember when.

Surely the traditional gift is eight maids a-milking!

It's an orthodox Christian thing. DH is orthodox and celebrates it on NY (presents, meal erc). I imagine it's something someone has gone on the bandwagon but not realised that they don't celebrate on the 25th

YES! Absolutely. Have done this all my life. In Russia, Father Frost visits the children New Year's Eve so we always got presents on the 1st.
We carried this over now that we are not in Russia anymore (lucky DC get presents on Xmas and New Years Day! Wink)

In Scotland we do “first fitting/first footing” where you bring a gift if you go into someone’s house on the 1st. It’s more to the owners of the house though not the kids.
