We are in the South West, Somerset area.
We started in silver band (second highest) but moved to gold band (highest) the day we were classed as homeless.
Had to wait 9 months for a house, but that was shortened by the fact we became top priority as overstayed in old house so became officially homeless, still took 3 months to get one after becoming homeless, even though there were houses available. Unfortunately this meant we had no choice about which house we could get, if one came up we had to accept it or go to the bottom of the list, regardless of condition, where it was etc.

(Me, dh and 4 boys managed to get a 3 bed house just under a year before oldest turned 16, therefore we are officially classed as overcrowded now but we have little hope of getting a 4 bed as we are currently housed. We were fortunate to get a house though, and we only had to move 2 children's schools, the 2 who were in secondary managed to stay in their school.)

Unfortunately the housing situation is much worse in other areas, there can be up to 10 year long waiting lists because there are just not enough houses available.

I fled DV to a new council, I just turned up to the council offices with my daughter and claimed homelessness because of domestic violence. We were put in a B&B that night, but the only cooking facility was a kettle. After 2 nights they moved us into a hostel which at least had a fridge and a microwave. After 3 weeks there we were given a place at a refuge. We spent 3 months there. We were put in emergency banding which meant that I had to accept anything they gave me.

We spent just over 2 years there, i had another DC and as my daughter turned 6 and my DC are opposite genders, I became eligible for a 3bed on her 6th birthday. As we also had no garden it meant that i had more than 1 need and i was moved to gold. Which was on Sept 7th, I reached number 1 on the list within 6 weeks and got the keys to my HA 3bedroom house with a garden on 31st Oct.

I realise I'm extremely lucky and my council are fab! I'm in the south East

Thank you for your replies :)
I don't think we are prioty ones.
Just really overcrowded, everyone getting on top of each other and on low incomes. :( So probably awhile yet. :/

Bedfordshire band 2 (general needs not homeless or emergency) bidding in July got a house in December . Neighbouring town waits are years and years and there is no general needs list only emergency homeless domestic violence and then 9/10 they use private rentals to discharge their duty
