Piano for beginners

Hello all! I’m looking for advice and recommendations for teaching myself and my 5-year-old to play the piano. Re-teaching myself really, as I learned as a child - did grade 4 exam and then stopped, and haven’t played at all since. We’ve now been given a free piano, which is arriving next week, and I’m wondering about the best way to get back into it and to start teaching my DS! I don’t want to start him having formal lessons yet as he’s still settling into Reception etc. - just want to start letting him play for fun. Does anyone have any suggestions for books we should buy or any tips for how to approach this? Thanks in advance!

Get a piano tutor. It's ok to teach theory to yourself and others if your knowledge is sound but correct technique needs to be taught by a tutor.

We found the Thompson books very good for beginners.

I'm sixteen lessons in so far. My teacher uses the Piano Adventures books by Nancy and Randall Faber. I think they're pretty good - I'll be starting Book 2B before long.
