Aaaargh water coming through ceiling what do I do?

Is it a plumber or an electrician I call (coming through a spotlight) in kitchen directly below bathroom.

I came downstairs to see it. No marks on ceiling and not bulging or soft to touch but v fast drip from spotlight. I had been having a bath and it was draining and as it drained dd took a shower which is in the bath. But had a v blue bath as it had a v bright bath bomb in it and the water coming through is definitely clear. So it is either from shower pipes or maybe the loo or dh thinks the shower screen wasn’t shy properly and it was coming from the floor being flooded by the shower which is possible (the bathmat on the floor was sopping).

In which case do we just leave it and see whether it happens again? Can we use the lights while it dries out? (They are still working but I have turned them off).

We are so rubbish at diy and knowing what to do and also no money this month for plumbers etc.

We have an upstairs shower we can use for now.

Call plumber and turn your water off at the mains x

CrispbuttyNo1 · 30/12/2018 21:43

Call a plumber. Turn your water off. Don’t touch the switch for the light either.

... can you use the lights whilst it’s still drying??! Shock

NO!!!

call your home insurance company who will sort out a plumber or whatever else you need

vanillasky1001 · 30/12/2018 21:43

Water off and plumber quick!

SillyMoomin · 30/12/2018 21:44

... and don’t tell me you and your dh are so useless with house stuff that you haven’t got home insurance

notsosureaboutthatthough · 30/12/2018 21:45

Plumber and don’t touch the lights.
Can you get the bath panel off the side to have a look for anything obvious? We had his once and the over flow pipe had disconnected, so quick fix and no plumber

DeadZed · 30/12/2018 21:45

You need to find the source of the water before you use your bathroom again.

You can take the side bath panel off and have a look for any leaks. Lift the bathroom floorboards if necessary.

The light will "probably" be fine when it has dried out but don't switch on until it has and you have located the source of the water.

Pinkkahori · 30/12/2018 21:45

Has it slowed down? Sounds like it was caused by the water on the floor. If that's the case then you don't need a plumber but you probably will need an electrician.

Definitely do not use the lights.

We had this Christmas day Smile

threestars · 30/12/2018 21:49

Probably the shower - mine did this after I cleaned it too thoroughly and messed with drainage pipe.
Mop up with towels and put fan heater in room plus humidifier if you have one.
Let it dry out first, check tomorrow and then decide whether to get in a plumber or not.
I have flooded bathroom 3 times over the years 😖.
Once the ceiling has dried out, light will be fine - but not yet!

Fairylea · 30/12/2018 21:53

Turn off water at mains.

Can you get bath panel off or / and peel back flooring to see what water is going where?

Deminism · 30/12/2018 22:04

Yes of course we have insurance.

Well as soon as I saw it I got dd to turn shower off by which time bath had finished draining anyway. It stopped dripping after a couple of minutes. I have wiped around the lights with kitchen roll so I will know if it is wet again. Lights are off.

We tried running bath a bit and no more drips so not the bath. Haven’t flushed loo yet - will do that next. Dh now convinced it was shower flooding floor because screen not shut properly.

Can’t take up floor as is tiles.

It'll be the floor. Dry it off and give a lecture about the shower screen being in place properly.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 30/12/2018 22:15

This happened in my house when a guest turned on shower, left door open and wandered off to sort their clothes. Water was pouring into the kitchen. All dried out within 24 hours

Deminism · 30/12/2018 22:16

Thank you. Gives me hope! Going to go to bed and not worry about it until morning!
