Hi all. Does your 12 year old go out a lot? Call for their mates? Go on bike rides? Im struggling to get Ds to do anything, and worry that he's becoming really antisocial....

No he doesn't. He talks to them on his ps4 headset but that's recent as he only got it for Xmas. He doesn't really have friends near us tbh

It's a shame isn't it....? At their agee, I was getting up to allsorts of mischief...harmless of course

I think we see less children out on the street these days, they 'socialise' with their phones and consoles :(

Mine did, he didn't do it much before that age but it took off, for which I was glad. He had a lovely time which feels me with joy because I had nothing by comparison.

I remember a bike ride in which he and friend rode through a pond! Emerged well mucky and we were going out that night for his dad's 40th at a restaurant! We got him cleaned up and changed and arrived at restaurant a bit late but nobody minded.

Lots of happy memories of that age.

My son is very social online. He will go out with mates to kick a ball about but not in winter.

Kim82 · 30/12/2018 18:44

My dd is 11.5 but in year 7 so a few of her friends are 12. She is always out and about with them, they have sleepovers, go to the park, walk into the small town near us and wander round the shops. She’s very sociable and when they’re not together they’re FaceTiming each other! 14 year old dd, on the other hand, rarely goes out. She’s at the cinema with a friend at the moment but that’s the first time she’s done anything over the Christmas period and doubt she’ll do much else if I’m honest, she’s always been quiet and likes her own company’s. She’ll spend hours drawing, organising her room (she’s very tidy) and watching YouTube. They’re both happy in their own ways so I just leave them to it.

He chats quite happily with friends, on his console, but the thought of knocking on their door, and getting out and about, is alien to him

My ds never went out, wa a a musswry, at 16 now he is always out.

Dd is 12 she is a social butterfly likes being out but if at home won't be locked away in her room like ds was

Kemer2018 · 30/12/2018 18:58

In the holidays, not v social.
In school time, a little.
We had an issue with a piss taking friend who stayed until 7 every school night but i stopped that a month ago.
Once or twice weekly till 5.30 is enough for that mate.
I have tried groups etc but she refuses to go.

Whatthefunk · 30/12/2018 19:06

We have a youth club, every month, but he refuses to go. Apparently, it's lame

I guess he's not that odd then...

My DD isn't particularly sociable, but this is partly because she does find friendships difficult. She does go out with friends occasionally, but this tends to be organised by me. She mostly prefers to be annoying us at home! I hope she gets more confident and outgoing in time.

Whatthefunk · 30/12/2018 19:35

I worry that it's a vicious circle. They stay in, because they feel awkward going out, but the longer they stay in, the more awkward and antisocial they get

Mine talks a lot to his friends via XBox but goes out a lot more in the summer when there are lighter evenings after school. He isn't keen on calling for other people but he has a friend in the next street who calls for him a lot, and they'll go out with bikes/go-karts/Nerf guns when the weather's OK, although they invariably end up back here on Fortnite eventually.
