Unusual Christmas gifts....

Hi All,

I’d be interested in your opinions on the gifts I received from my partner. I’m worried I’m being a bit too sensitive but after 2.5 years together, I would have expected different things. I am a single parent and although we don’t live together, he’s practically a step-parent to my children. Here are the highlights:

A cheeseboard with cheese making kit
A travel mug
A whisk
A jar of Marmite
Flavoured coffee and hot chocolate

Now....honestly....am I being a being ungrateful here? I made him a snood, got tickets to an event, bought him a cider making kit and various other little bits and bobs (he’d specifically chosen). It’s not about the imbalance of money or time, it’s more the fact that his gifts feel a bit.....platonic....to me. I don’t feel sexy or special when I’m opening a kitchen whisk (which I never mentioned wanting!). Neither of us has much money and I don’t expect the world but honestly, Marmite?

Opinions please.

If they're the hi-lights does that mean you got other stuff on top of that?

It wouldn't be my cup of tea but it sounds like he thought you're a foodie/like cooking and tried to do a theme -badly-.

No, this is the comprehensive list. Along with watching me spend £200 on all the Christmas food and drink and offering me....nothing. I think there are some solvency issues here.

It does sound a bit shit then especially when compared to what he got. I think the next occasion you both need to discuss a budget and give him an elbow in the right direction.

They don't seem very girly gifts to be honest. No perfume, smellies or jewellery. I'd probably feel the same.

Many years ago we banned what we call "presents for the house" as it's always the women that end up with them! If someone asks for something specifically then of course but as whisk is a gift to the house surely. Was it a personalised cheese board?

Nope, not personalised. I love cheese but these gifts are what I’d put in my parents’ hamper, to be honest.
