Wierd question about old style Indonesian (or Indian?) sarongs

I have a 25 year old sarong which I bought on my travels when I was young, about 25 years ago.

Sadly my memory is a bit hazy - it seems like something I'd have bought in Indonesia, but I think I remember having it before I visited Indonesia, and may have bought it in Kerala or Goa... I'm certain I bought it from a beach vendor.

The thing is it's a fantastic thing and I want to buy 3 more, but where would I do that, without getting on a long haul flight, which I may never do again, certainly not in the next 10 years...

It's strong and a bit stretchy - I've used it as a blanket, a towel, a dress, a shirt, a curtain in cheap hostels without curtains, a picnic blanket, and in more recent years I've even used it as a toddler hip sling. My kids all covet it and like to sleep with it, but I only have one!

It has no label so I don't really know what it's made of, though I think it's batik printed.

It's been washed in many ways but washes and tumble dries without issue.

It's nothing like a flimsy fashion sarong available in high street clothing shops.

Does anyone else have a satin like this and know where I could buy more of them online or whether they have a specific name or description I could search under?

Long shot but Mumsnet is full of people who travel / have travelled/ who went backpacking in the early 1990s or thereabouts, and might have something similar! Grin

I had a few like you describe bought from beach vendors in India. I sadly don’t have them any more but I had some beautiful ones.

Do you have any “hippy” shops in your town? The type that sells insence and stuff (tbh not even sure this type of shop exists any more, they were abundant in the 90’s)

JustanotherCHRISTMASuser01 · 30/12/2018 07:41

do you perhaps have any Asian shops? there's loads in one area in derby that sell the most beautiful stuff.
sorry I know that's not the most pc phrase!

Thanks Eminy and Just - there's a "one world" shop in the next town but not a lot else. I've been in once to buy a dreamcatcher (desperate try anything tactics for non sleeping child) I didn't notice sarongs but it's worth a look. Otherwise I think online is my only chance.

Would one of these do OP?

They are thicker that the lightweight sarongs, more of a tablecloth thickness Fantastically durable.

I’ve had mine (cough) 25 years. It’s been on a 2 yr backpacking trip, was used as kitchen curtains in my first flat, and wrapped up my baby. It goes on every trip as hand And has been a blanket, towel headscarf, scarf, picnic blanket, throw, you name it. I’ve totally converted DH who always advises male and female friends to ‚‘always pack a sarong‘

Actually, just found the exact brand. Ignore the other link.

It’s called a lungi in Indian clothing stores and can be made by hemming any type of fabric. Go to an Indian or Pakistani fabric shop to get the most options, buy as much as you need, and ask them for a tailor recommendation to get it hemmed and lined.

Sitranced · 30/12/2018 16:09

Head to a part of town where is a big Asian community. I live in that area of Derby that justanother mentions and there are at least a dozen shops just on the high street selling saris sarongs and beautiful fabrics. There will be more of these communities in towns close to where you live.

blueskiesandforests · 30/12/2018 16:49

Sadly there most certainly aren't Asian communities in towns close to where I live Sitranced - there's a big Turkish community but very few people of Indian or SE Asian origin and certainly not a community. I live outside the UK where historical immigration was from Turkey and Eastern Europe not India/ Asia.

Zwischen thank you, I actually prefer the first website as the second only has 2 colours in the classic kikoy. I have never been to Africa so what I have isn't a kikoy technically, but your personal recommendation sounds good and similar to what I have and am looking for.
