Has anyone ever 'guilt' bought something?

Or bought something so as not to lose face/ cause embarrassment?

I was at an indoor market today with friends and was looking at an item I liked. Seller was clear about the quality of the material and how well it was made etc. I was deciding to buy it when as she was getting the card reader out I realised that the contents that came with the item were display only. It was nearly 40 pounds, we'd had a good chat but I didn't want it for that much money!

In the end it didn't matter as her card reader wasn't working and I did not have any money on me. I have learnt my lesson next time to check and not just assume!

Always.

Yeah my dh and fil are awful for this. The time I came home from work to find some bloke drilling a hole in our side wall about bloody foam insulation (that previous owners had already pulled) to my fil spending £150 on refillable printer cartridges that didn't work but wouldn't complain/ask for a refund/do anything. I'm ex-sales and know all the outs but they always nod and go along with it. Ended up with £80 worth of sodding artisan candles this month after I chased after the toddler and left him alone for 2 minutes at a Christmas market. Confused

cheesenpickles - yes your dh and fil sound like me! I am intrigues by your knowledge of all of the outs, sounds like that could be useful.

What was the story/ excuse behind the artisanal candles? That is a lot! I'm not sure even I would have manged eighty pounds worth - do they give a good light? or is it regifting?

I need to know the outs!

I'm guilty of this at craft/Christmas/country shows.
I always come away with a preserve I don't really want.

Me too!

It is something about the person who made it being right in front of you maybe.

There's a lovely shop in the next town and I was admiring their advent calendars. Proper old fashioned card ones with pics behind.

DS took a fancy to one with a steam train on (he's obsessed!) and I picked it up to look at it. The assistant commented on how lovely it was so I took it to the checkout and at the last minute checked the price. £14.50! For a bit of card. But of course it was too embarrassed to put it back (right next to the till) so I bought it. I'm going to close the sodding doors and use it forever.

I'm crap for doing that! One reason why I won't go into an empty shop as I'll feel guilty for walking out without buying anything. Ridiculous, I know!

GrandmaSteglitszch · 30/12/2018 19:52

No, I don't usually.
Just remember that person will never see you again, or if they do they won't remember you, or if they do so what.

Recently I set my mind on an item in an indi shop. Took it to the tills without checking the price.
The snooty shop lady said 'this is £75. Is that going to be alright?'
In my mind I was thinking nooooooooooooo!!!!!! Thats outrageous.
But my mouth said yes thank you.

Maybe that's a pride buy more than a guilt buy.
