Gallbladder attack with no gallbladder

I had my gallbladder out 6months ago. I'd been having gallbladder attacks quite frequently (didn't know what they were at the time though) had one that just didn't stop so had my gallbladder out after being sent to a&e by gp. Haven't had one since, until last night after work. It was horrendous, nothing eased it and it lasted around 5hours or so. I can feel another one coming on now. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas what this pain is if it's not my gallbladder? I'll be going to the go next Wednesday when it re-opens but I'm hoping someone has some advice in the meantime

Another one here who can't take codeine now. I felt like I was having a heart attack when I did.
Also can't have Covonia medicine which is gutting as I used to love that stuff.

No Mrs skeffington, probably quite the opposite actually! The one thing my gall bladder removal did help with was my heartburn. I used to get it really bad but since it was removed I’ve rarely had it.

I got the sphincter of Oddi pain for a year or so after my op but haven't had it for many years now.
I still keep a packet of Buscopan at home, just in case. Buscopan has stopped countless gall attacks in their tracks for me. One tablet usually, occasionally I needed two.

I sent dh out for buscopan this morning and have just taken one because I was feeling the start of an attack, still uncomfortable but it hasnt progressed into a full attack- life savers, thank you so much for the advice! I took the codine after the attack started the other day, I've been prescribed it for back pain as well as after the op, and I think I took some in the afternoon before the attack so it may have been the trigger as many of you suggested, would never have occurred to me without you lovely lot. Hopefully if I avoid codine I won't get another and I'll be keeping buscopan in the medicine cupboard from now on!

And remember to take the second one if you can still feel anything suspicious an hour after you've taken the first one.
After those two you stick to the recommended dose for the whole 24 hour period (include those two in your count, of course).
I sometimes had to take the second but never had to take a third.

This happened to me and I had an mri in case of a stuck stone. All was clear then I discovered it happened when I took codeine. It took me a while to twig but it hasn't happened in the past few years since I stopped codeine, which in itself is a bummer because it's a great pain killer.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I had my gallbladder our in April 2017, but in the last couple of months have been having horrible pains, and no amount of googling told me what was wrong!
Now having read this, I cam go to the Dr and explain exactly what's going on, as before, I couldn't find the right way to explain it.

hairypaws · 30/12/2018 23:35

@1stTimeMama what are you seeing the dr for? Is it because you are having pain after using codeine? I'd so, in my experience they don't care and dismiss it. My dr looked at me like I was crazy after I discovered the link. I just hope I'm never in the position of needing strong pain relief and them refusing an alternative to codeine.

Yes! I also have the same reaction with codeine. Gall bladder removal 5 years ago. I had a reaction just after the operation when I took for some pain then again a year later. The doctor said I probably had an ulcer or something and sent me for an MRI. It came back clear so they said a sensitivity or allergy could be to blame! I totally avoid codiene now.

A work mate said she still has pain where her Gallbladder used to be. I have a gallstone on my gallbladder and the pain is like no other. I feel like I've been kicked in the ribs.

I've had no pain for months, but lately is bloody awful. I wonder if said stone is on the move.

1stTimeMama · 31/12/2018 00:52

@hairypaws, my pains have nothing to do with codeine. I have some stashed from after my op, but haven't taken any for the pain, and it sounds like I shouldn't!
I'm convinced it's something to do with the gallbladder though, I thought the Dr would write me off if I said something, but seeing how others have had the same thing, I think Its worth being checked out.

I still have my gallbladder unfortunately but when I get a severe attack I find a hot water bottle on the area can really help as does massaging the area and rocking backwards and forwards, I occasionally ask my DP to hit my back as it seems to help strangely enough.

Hell yes to the co-codamol pain. First time I took it post gb op was for a smear (odd angle so hurts) and ended up howling over the table with a very concerned practice nurse. The second time was at home - dh rang 111 and they sent an ambulance as I'd been at the worst bit and it must've sounded bad down the phone (it was at the time). Co-codamol has pancreatitis as a side effect - basically the same pain as gall bladder. Every other time I'd taken it, it was for gall bladder/pancreatitis so unsure if I reacted with a gall bladder or just without.

Have recently found that I'm ok with morphine (oramorph) for something completely unrelated, tramadol seemed ok too. Morphine was better, but bloody hell I can understand how people get addicted!

Pain in that area could also be hiatus hernia - monitor what you eat in case there's a link.

@Chickenwings85 - I found hands and knees on the stairs or in a warm bath helped too
