Children arguing over Alexa music... help!

We thought it would be a good idea to give our 2 DC an Alexa each for their bedroom. They're enjoying playing some of the games, asking what the time is, getting the weather forecast and 'dropping in' on other Alexas in the house.

BUT they're arguing over the music. When one's listening to Little Mix, the other asks Alexa to play something else in their bedroom. It then gives the 'Alexa is playing on another device' message and the music ping pongs between the two bedrooms while the children shout louder and louder to 'win' the music back in their room. How do you overcome this problem? We have Amazon Music Unlimited. Is the only solution to upgrade to Amazon Family Music? But that says it's for over 13s only.

In the meantime, I'll try to divert their attention from the music. Has anyone got any good commands that will keep the DC amused without playing music? We've already discovered 'Alexa fart'!

Either upgrade the subscription or one DC needs to use Spotify and the other Amazon music.

katykins85 · 30/12/2018 18:56

Just change ypur subscription to family or whatever its called so you can listen on mutiple devices. Its £14.99 per month, bargain

katykins85 · 30/12/2018 18:56

I have 3 alexa devices and can all be used at the same time

Dolceandgabbana14 · 30/12/2018 20:36

Thanks! We don't subscribe to Spotify so it won't stream on Alexa. I think it'll have to be the upgrade. Is it £14.99 in addition to the £7 we already pay for Music Unlimited, or just £14.99 a month?

Katy, ours can all be used at the same time, apart from staking music which is what the DC want Confused

Streaming, not staking!

No, it's just £14.99 a month. You can also get a single echo account which is £3.99 a month, so could sign one of them up to that separately. They could only use it on that device though, not on phones etc.

katykins85 · 31/12/2018 07:11

That's what i mean, all 3 can stream different music for the £14.99 not just 1.

Tattybear16 · 31/12/2018 07:17

What did they play music on before the Alexa? They need to learn to share. Go into the app and remove their devices temporarily and show them what happens if they argue and shout. If you want to spend the £14.99 a month, then get it for their birthdays.

I have the exact same problem but when I tried to set this up, it looks as if each family member needs their own email address - does that mean they have to have their own way of registering the Alexa to their email? As my children are too young for phones and emails but do have an echo dot each?

Skittlesandbeer · 31/12/2018 07:39

I don’t see this as a technology problem at all. It’s a discipline problem.

How about you set up a schedule or system for sharing, and pull both devices out of rooms if there are squabbles? 3 squabbles in a week, and they lose devices for a week. You know, discipline.

katykins85 · 31/12/2018 08:36

ceevee,no I have one account for all of our devices so no need for separate email addresses.

katykins85 · 31/12/2018 08:38

skittles don't be so miserable! They are 2 excited kids with new gadgets that they want to use! What's wrong with the OP changing her account so everyone can enjoy their own music whenever they like?

katykins85 · 31/12/2018 08:39

OP, if you look on your app it will show you Alexa skills, loads of them on there for them to have fun with Smile

ceeveebee · 31/12/2018 09:05

Thanks katykins - so do you just upgrade to Family and then ignore the part where it asks for the family members email addresses?

Wingbing · 31/12/2018 09:22

One of the things we have found Alexa great for, is taking turns. DS 5 & 3 use it to set 5 minute timers for taking turns.

If you don’t want to spend anymore then maybe that is an option?

Rockbird · 31/12/2018 09:28

We use Google play music and Google home but same principle. I upgraded to the family plan because I want everyone to be able to listen to their own choice. DH wasn't brought up with music in the house and I was and so it's important to me that they develop their own music tastes even if I think they're wrong! Grin
