I nearly got taken in by a fraudster yesterday

This is a warning to you all:

I've had a JL Partnership card for years and I order things from the website to collect in store so I get regular texts from them telling me my order is ready. Yesterday I got a text from them telling me to call them urgently because of suspected fraud, so I dialled the phone number in the text message.

I spoke to a woman who said she was from the fraud team and that there had been an attempt to spend £700 on my card at Amazon, and they just wanted to check it was me. I said it wasn't me and thank goodness they'd picked it up etc. Then she said there had been another attempt to use it and she was going to send me another text asking me to revalidate my card on Apple Pay and she would call me back. At that point, I got a bit suspicious and said I'd call her back.

She agreed very politely but, rather than calling the number in the text, I called the customer services number on the back of my credit card. While I was on hold, I got several calls from a number withheld number Hmm

John Lewis confirmed that the whole thing was a scam and that somehow these criminals had managed to get text messages to appear as if they're sent from them! Shock Since the time I had spoken to the woman, there had been several attempts to use my card via Apple Pay.

Tl;dr: if you get a text from your credit card provider telling you that there has been fraudulent activity on your account, call them number on the back of your card. DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER IN THE TEXT MESSAGE!

Merry Christmas. Stay safe Smile

Just to be clear - the top text is a genuine text from John Lewis. The bottom two are from the fraudsters.
