Do you ever have a night where you are unable to sleep for no obvious reason?

I never do but I did last night. I have no idea why. Other than it being quite windy outside but I’ve had that before and slept as normal. Last night I just could not sleep. And then I got very angry because I couldn’t sleep. Which I think kept me awake. I finally dozed off after 8:30 this morning and woke at 11.

In my case I think it's hormonal (40+ and confirmed peri menopause). I have about two nights a month like it when I'm literally wide awake until about 4.30/5. Then I think I have a weird sleep paralysis thing where I suddenly can't keep my eyes open but start seeing creepy figures around the bed trying to quite literally drag me to sleep so I desperately try and fight it until I feel calmer then zone out around 6am. Fucking horrible it is.

Like a previous poster said I used to get really angry and anxious at the time in the night I realised it was going to be One of Those nights but now I try and go with it.

Really feel for some of you that have horrible insomnia it must be horrific Sad

Try Olly sleep gummies, they're really good on the occasional night sleep evades you.

I haven't slept through the night for over ten years - that is what Radio 4 Extra is for!

I usually get to sleep ok, but I just keep waking up. A good night is when I don't wake up until 5.

My friend takes night nurse when she has a bad night and does not want the next one to be sleepless.

Friends who have done day/night shifts for years, suffer from insomnia, their body clocks are completely messed up.

Used to have this problem regularly until we moved. Since we've been in current house I gave one bad night every 3-6 months. And it's always when my mind is racing too much to switch off. It used to be because I was frightened.

Often. I have no trouble falling asleep but wake at least once in the night and sometimes struggle to go back to sleep. Usually I'm hot even though we don't have any heat in the bedroom, only 4.5 tog duvet in winter. Of course I throw the cover off, then I'm cold.
It's a relatively recent thing, I used to sleep brilliantly. It's probably getting oldSad

Do those new bulbs in street lamps disturb anyone? A friend has had to buy blackout blinds for her bedroom because her street lamp bulbs have been replaced.

Don’t often have trouble falling asleep but if I wake in the night I rarely fall Back to sleep. I consider anything after 6 a lie in.

God I feel so bad for all of you!! I feel like an idiot for complaining now. I had bad insomnia when I had PND that lasted a few years but thankfully it went. I can’t imagine it being permanent. I’m so sorry.

Last night. Didn't fall asleep til about 7am. Thankfully I'm still off work. My head is racing with work stuff though and returning to an abusive, aggressive line manager.
It happens not infrequently and is grim.

I have on average about one night a week like this. I just cannot switch my brain off and fall asleep. I do have nights when I can't sleep because of various aches and pains (I have rheumatoid and osteo arthritis, plus fibromyalgia and severe tendonitis/RSI in my right shoulder). But sometimes it's not because of being in pain,it's because my brain seems to go into overdrive as soon as my head touches the pillow.
I'm not a very good sleeper at the best of times. If I manage to stay asleep for 3 hours at a stretch, that is very good going for me. On average,I wake up every hour and a half, for no real reason. Thankfully,I usually manage to get back to sleep within a few minutes. For the last 2 weeks,I've been using a herbal 'sleep aid' tablet. I bought it in Poundland. It contains hops and valerian. I don't know whether it's purely coincidence, but in the 2 weeks I've been using it,I haven't had one bad night. The number of times I've been waking seems to have reduced too,I've been staying asleep for 3 hours at a stretch quite regularly, and even managed 4 hours a few nights ago. Smile

I sometimes struggle to fall asleep, I listen to the shipping forecast on radio 4 to help me drop off, especially if Neil Nunes is reading it. He has the most soothing voice!
