Vegan guests dilemma - what would you do?

The DC could do with a bit of a distraction, so I've told them that I'll invite a few of our family friends over for a play and then they can stay for a casual supper and board games. The kids are thrilled, and I'm just about to text people.

The fridge and cupboards are still groaning with food from Christmas, so it's easy enough to sling a nice buffet on the table (massive cheeseboard, various canape things, quiche, potato salad, coleslaw, pates etc.) The issue is that I've just remembered that one of the families is vegan.

We're actually a vegetarian family, so it shouldn't be too hard, but now I'm looking at what they can actually eat, I don't think we can cater for them adequately. I mean, we've got a bag of salad, and I think the crisps are ok, and we've got olives - but that's not supper, is it? I've neither the fridge space, time, money (nor, honestly, the inclination) to go out and buy/make additional vegan stuff.

Choices are:

a) Leave vegan family out (feels mean)

b) invite vegan family but explain that we have limited vegan stuff in and they may want to bring something to supplement it (feels rude)

c) Invite vegan family and hope that they don't mind only eating crisps and olives (feels inhospitable)

What would you do?

Plain dried pasta does not usually have egg in it, only some fresh pasta.

At short notice I'd go with A. If you can't host them to the same level as other guests then don't invite.

Mini beans ok no toast canapés! 😂

You just need to invite and state

‘Hi family gathering for supper and board games - bring something for the table’

They may be laden with food and drinks as well and nothing wrong with a cheeky swap!!

We do this quite often and nobody minds

We sometimes do this in park play date and everyone grabs a few bits to bring

We had a vegan guest over recently for a buffet type meal, I am a terrible cook but we managed quite well on the following party food (from sainsburys)

Falafel
Houmous
Broad bean salad
Cous cous salad
Spring rolls
Indian snacks
Olives

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be!

I wouldn't invite them if I couldn't be arsed to go out and get some food in for them! You're much nicer than me, OP.

We have a vegan staying for a week. I have done pitta bread and hummus for lunch today, picked up a vegan pizza for tonight with salad. Got some vegan ice cream and lots of fruit for dessert.

Ololmat ‘store, cupboard ingreients’- I don’t have any of those
It just show how different everyone is. These are everyday basics to us!!
It's an ok spread you have managed to put on at short notice OP

I would have added garlic mushrooms, and from now until they arrive I woukd very slow stew some garlic, onion wedges and peppers. If you do enough the non vegans can have some with mozzarella.

Apileofballyhoo · 29/12/2018 17:09

This is really tasty, OP. Chickpeas, red onion, red pepper, garlic, lime juice, olive oil and coriander. I think a few substitutions for anything you don't have and it would still be nice.

If you're vegetarian have you got any tofu in? Crispy tofu ( coatpieces in flour and fry) have a mango ( blend together2 oz ripe mangoes
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon lime juice
2 tablespoons coconut milk
1/2 teaspoon salt )
made in seconds.
