How much do you pay for celebration cakes?

Full disclosure, I run a home based cake business.

I'm not a large business but in order to make any kind of profit I do need to charge sensible money for bespoke cake. I've been in business 4 years but don't make an annual profit. I'm just wondering if it's actually worth it.

I'm in the Midlands but close to a large city.

Do you buy bespoke cakes? If so, what event would you splash out for?

Thanks.

If 2 or more businesses agree not to compete with each other in certain ways, it’s called a ‘cartel’.

The rules on cartels apply to businesses of any size.
Rules about cartels cover:

price fixing
bid rigging
sharing markets or customers
sharing commercially sensitive information
An agreement doesn’t have to be in writing for it to be illegal. You can break the law if you have an informal conversation (or ‘gentleman’s agreement’) with another business, even if the agreement isn’t carried out.

Avoid anti-competitive acitivity

Only reason I know is it in our companies code of conduct.

I don’t really understand people commissioning these cakes for normal birthdays. I can understand wedding or significant birthdays but all the supermarkets do great looking cakes for children’s birthdays in many themes. Why pay several pounds per portion of cake every year, unless money is no object.

Spotsbeforemyeyes · 29/12/2018 18:17

blackbears the supermarkets don't do unlimited designs and they're often not very big.

I'm a hobby Baker really I've had a couple of friends ask me in the past few months to make cakes for them I'd never make cake for a stranger it would kill me in stress. I've got my first wedding cake to make in a few weeks for my best friends sisters wedding I'm charging £180 for 3 tier that's 10" 8" and 6" in a couple of weeks it's pretty plain just ribbon and a few roses on top. I couldnt do it cheaper boards dowels fondant and ganache are expensive!! I'm Midlands aswell. I'd never push into business people dont want to pay what it would cost for me to actually make a living from it so I'll stick to now and then for a friend

It might be worth checking past posts - this question. (With photos) comes up from
Home bakers a lot. Can you post some photos?

I spent £65 on a 60th birthday cake similar to this goo.gl/images/q8WDEa at the beginning of the year. I’d be willing to pay more to go back to same woman because it tasted and looked so good. I often find cakes which look good don’t taste so good!

(I’m in the sticks in central Scotland.)

Well I don’t for every birthday and I wouldn’t for a children’s party, but when I do it’s because I want nice cake, supermarket cake isn’t good.
