What type of dog would you recommend to us?

There is only me and dh, no children, and no other pets.

We’re in our 50s (not sure if that’s relevant), but we are reasonably fit and healthy and try to have a decent walk as often as we can. Obviously, this will be ramped up when we get a dog.

We’ve never had a dog before, (though my parents had a couple when we were children), so we would prefer one that’s easy to look after, with an even temperament, and now that we both work part time hours, either one of us can do our share of the walks, care etc.

Tbh I’ve been keen to have a dog for ages, but our full time hours (at the time) meant that the poor dog would be left in the house all day.

I think a dog would bring us some enrichment in our lives, and some focus. And exercise as mentioned before.

Some pics as well as advice would be welcome 🐕.

@woolyheart.... I’d take 27p for my whippet and throw in a free Weimaraner. Pair of bin raiding bastards today.

Tatiebee · 28/12/2018 19:49

I echo pp suggestion of a retired greyhound or one of the many lurchers that are in rescue kennels at the moment. We have a four year old greyhound and he's the softest, sweetest boy. In general greyhounds are gentle, placid and lazy (but will enjoy walking as much or as little as you'd like). Most haven't had very good lives whilst racing which is a shame as they are so loving and adapt really well to living in the home.

anothermansmother · 28/12/2018 19:50

I'd recommend a boxer, when we looks at getting a dog we fostered initially ( teacher and it was the summer holidays) we then fostered again from the same rescue but knew when we picked him up he was a permanent member of our household.
Boxers are actually quite chilled out dogs ( except when in the puppy stage!) and our lovely boy is 7 and just enjoys your company.
We used a breed rescue, as I wanted a boxer or boxer cross breed. But fostering really may be great for you.

I have two lurchers (and foster lurcher puppies for EGLR) and they are fantastic. We were walking on the Malverns today and its amazing to see them run up the side of the hills - but now they are upside down asleep Smile
Many lurchers come into rescue because they have no prey drive (ddog1 was bred for hare coursing but my chickens actually walk over him), but obviously recall and prey drive are things a rescue can tell you about.

GinIsIn · 28/12/2018 19:53

A lurcher might be better than a greyhound - greyhounds are lovely, but so, so snoozy! If you want to go out and about for lots of walks they may not be for you as they are really quite lazy!

Mummyshark2018 · 28/12/2018 20:05

I have a gorgeous cockapoo who is perfect for our family and although super friendly, cuddly and clever ime they are very excitable!

Badadadum · 28/12/2018 22:03

Our whippet is a lazy bugger - sleeps a large part of the day but he is always up for a walk!

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 30/12/2018 14:04

Lurchers are a firm favourite.

I’ve also been over to the doghouse threads.

I need to stop talking about dogs though as dh is threatening to change his mind with me harping on about them 😂.

Uilani is a lovely girl who is still looking for a home, long after her puppies got rehomed....

I have 3 Spanish galgos (closely related to the greyhound). They sleep for 21 hours a day, love their 30 minute poggle and are the gentlest boys on the planet.

I know someone with a beautiful girl from here ...

Boring Soup, a dog will make a house a home. I have a working cocker x springer (double spaniel genes, not recommended!). He is smart, stubborn, self-centred, but also utterly devoted with the most meltingly beautiful eyes. I would have another working spaniel in a heartbeat, but my cat would murder me in my sleep. So in all honesty, I wouldn't recommend one unless you really knew that was the breed for you.

But, I have met multiple lurchers recently who could convert me. They have all been incredibly well-mannered, even as puppies, and good long, kissable snouts. Go for it!

FlyingMonkeys · 01/01/2019 13:48

Staffies are very loyal, cuddly, chunky/muscular little tanks. Mine will walk for 10miles with out a quarm and plod up and down hills. They're also incredible people pleasers so mine will now move to the side and sit if off lead and spots a cyclist on a route we go on. Not keen on other dogs but also sits and waits for lead vs approaching.

Santaisfastasleepatlast · 01/01/2019 13:49

Ours having a lazy NYE!

What type of dog would you recommend to us?
agedknees · 01/01/2019 14:01

Top photo is my cross terrier from dogs trust. Curly dog photo is my granddog.

Would definitely recommend getting a rescue dog.

fourquenelles · 01/01/2019 17:49

@BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFest Thank you! (reverted back to normal nickname after Xmas).

Have a look at galgosdelsol.org/ to get an idea about these beautiful dogs who are so cruelly treated by their hunters in Spain. There are several already in the UK in foster.

HildegardCrowe · 01/01/2019 17:57

You sound like ideal dog owners! Please go for a rescue dog, you'll know the temperament of the dog and there's so much choice. Anything from a JRT mix to a greyhound. Avoid cockapoos and designer dogs. They are one a penny and sadly seem to belong to people who are more interested in making a fashion statement than in enhancing the life of a dog as well as their own.

oldmum22 · 01/01/2019 18:05

Our Ruby is a border terrier. She is loyal, intelligent ,totally devoted and beautiful. She does have small dog syndrome and is quite happy to let bigger dogs know that she is boss. I wouldn't be without her for the world. We got her from the border terrier welfare charity .

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/01/2019 18:08

My rescue boy is a pug. And yes I am aware that they have problems but I knew that when I rescued him. He is the most loveable, daftest and gorgeous dog

MorningsEleven · 01/01/2019 18:09

I've had greyhounds for 20 years. I tried to wean myself off but I can't do it. They're big, daft, lazy, greedy and far too keen on the furniture but there's something about them that draws you in.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 01/01/2019 22:07

We went for a walk today, and a guy was walking his two greyhounds.
They were so gorgeous and well behaved, I couldn’t stop looking at them. Poor bloke probably thought I was in for a bit of dog napping, so he fled with them prey quickly 😂.
@HildegardCrowe, thank you 🙂It’ll definitely be a rescue dog, whatever breed we choose.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 01/01/2019 22:07

*pretty.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 01/01/2019 22:09

Thanks for the photos of your dogs, they are all gorgeous.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 01/01/2019 22:13

Yikes, I’d forgotten I’d namechanged earlier 🤭.
