Car insurance premium increase after passing test

I'm learning to drive at the moment and am buying a car this week to practise in so will be insuring it on my provisional license.

I'm just wondering how much people had to fork out to insurers after they informed them they'd passed there test?

I've compared quotes for provisional and full licenses but I'm concerned that insurance companies are going to charge me more than a new customer would pay for a full license insurance because I've basically got no choice!

My 17 year old dd passed last week.

We had learner insurance with Collingwood at £40 per week. They only do learner insurance so it's now cancelled and I've take out a Policy with autosaint, it cost £1500 for the year.

Fully comp with me as a named driver (bought down the cost alot). She had her black box fitted this afternoon.
She has a 57 plate 950 cc car worth about £400.
That's the cheapest insurance we found.

I'd definitely go with a company that fits a black box. I passed my test in January this year and I paid £1,500. I've just got my renewal quote of £800. I know £800 is still a lot but it shows that good driving give you rewards

@OOOTTAFVGVAH you're welcome. Also check out insurance companies admin fee's as most will charge an admin fee for changing from provisional to full as well as the higher premium.

Direct line don't charge admin fees for making changes to their policies, it is just the different in the premium they charge/refund you.

My insurance went from being around £500 as a learner to just shy of £2000 when I passed - and they charged me a fee for updating my cover! Arghhh. That was the cheapest and was with 1st Central. I am now with Hastings as they are the cheapest. Pissed me right off. But I am down to just over 400 nearly three years on.

Police Mutual is the company

Cheers I was wracking my brains Grin

Never had to actually use them for a claim yet so don't know how they perform that way but hopefully time won't tell.

@OOOTTAFVGVAH you're welcome. I don't have a black box either but I'm not sure if that's because I'm a little older. I pick DH up and he's a chef so I drive at odd times of the day and didn't want to be penalised. My sister was 17 when she passed and it made a big difference to her quote. I also drive a smart car with the acceleration of a tea pot which may be a contributing factor but I love it!

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver

I'm thinking similarly as although my car will be kept at home, I have the odd night shift at my uni placement which I'll take the car up for so I have a safe way of getting home. The downside is we often finish in the early hours of the morning and I really don't want to have to be thinking about whether I'll get penalised for using my car then with a black box.

Grin to the image of a teapot on wheels.

Thank you everyone - was feeling extremely stupid before starting this thread because I just couldn't work it out.

Really appreciate all the help.

50shadow it would come down like that regardless, I didn't have a black box but if you see my earlier post I still had a massive reduction. Black boxes are a bit of a gimmick that mean very little imo.

katykins85 · 29/12/2018 05:58

3rd year now its gone to £420 for the year Smile

TheFairyCaravan · 29/12/2018 06:31

DS2 had a policy with Ingenie when he was a learner and it went up by £17 when he passed. We started off paying £1100 a year, but by the end it was £900 because they reduce your premium if you drive well. The black box they fit has no restrictions time wise which was one of the reasons we went with them, and we put me and DH down as named drivers which brings the price down a bit.

If anyone’s interested I went with Churchill in the end and my premium went down (!) £30 when I passed. Thanks for everyone’s advice.

I recommend Ingenie who I use for my daughter's car. She does have a black box but it gives her cash back for good driving reports. And their customer service is excellent.
