At least Netflix are fairly upfront (although I have a memory that sometimes you can't get stuff in the UK, despite subscribing).
This is correct and entirely down to local area rights issues that people sometimes don't understand or misunderstand.
A good example of this is the recent furore that all the Harry Potter films came on to Netflix in the US and people were talking about it as if it was also happening in the UK because they read the US announcement.
ITV owns the UK Broadcast rights for Harry Potter and is expected to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
The Office US is on Netflix in the US and Amazon in the UK (because Amazon bought the UK rights)
Everyone should note that when you subscribe to Netflix in the UK, you subscribe to its UK and Ireland service, not Netflix Worldwide. There were back door channels to the US/Can/EU Services but these were discovered by Netflix and shut off.
This is why several BBC shows are not on UK Netflix as they are in the US because they are still on iPlayer
Interestingly, having seen US Netflix they market BBC Shows on that service as Netflix Original, the likes of Happy Valley and Peaky Blinders that are emphatically homegrown shows and not Netflix shows. They must have permission for this, but who are they trying to kid ?
