Is Amazon Prime/Video or Netflix better for films?

I watch very few dramas so I'm mostly interested in their film selections. I especially enjoy drama and world cinema in any form. I'd appreciate it if anyone could advise which would be more suitable. TIA.

Netflix, I got rid of prime as it was shit.

TheMoleInAHole · 28/12/2018 14:11

Very few TV series that should say. I love drama films.

Netflix.

By a country mile.

Netflix is ok... Now TV is better.

Perfectly1mperfect · 28/12/2018 14:14

We have both but I definitely watch more on Netflix.

RagingWhoreBag · 28/12/2018 14:14

Netflix. Prime is shit. Anything that IS worth watching costs you extra but I rarely find anything to watch on there that isn’t also available elsewhere for free. I only have it because of next day delivery, I wouldn’t bother on it’s own merits.

brick10 · 28/12/2018 14:15

Netflix has more choice

drinkingfromthekegofglory · 28/12/2018 14:16

We also have both and I watch Netflix a lot more

PawneeParksDept · 28/12/2018 14:22

Netflix also make a lot more original content including international world cinema content

Alfonso Cuarons Roma for example is an Oscar contender and was funded by and therefore exclusive to Netflix

Their original drama film content does have its hits and misses though.

It does do a good line in romantic comedy.

MrsPear · 28/12/2018 14:40

Amazon prime is crap - most of the decent stuff has no subtitles according to ds1. Whereas on Netflix ds1 has yet to find something without them.

ElainaElephant · 28/12/2018 14:50

Netflix, definitely.

But worth a month of prime for the marvellous Mrs Maisel. Its fab.

HeathRobinson · 28/12/2018 14:54

We have both and prefer Netflix. I've watched some cracking foreign films and TV series in the genres I like.

DGRossetti · 28/12/2018 14:55

We have Prime for other reasons, so enjoy some of the stuff, but would never have paid extra for it.

It's the one area of Amazons offering where they fall down. They're just as shit as Virgin or Sky in that you subscribe, and then discover that all that does is allow you to pay extra for the good shit.

At least Netflix are fairly upfront (although I have a memory that sometimes you can't get stuff in the UK, despite subscribing).

TheMoleInAHole · 28/12/2018 15:12

Thank you all. It seems that Netflix is the best option although I'll look at NowTV too. Looking on Prime I can see a number of films that I'd like to watch but it I'd soon run out of options there's little point. I'll go with Netflix.

This is correct and entirely down to local area rights issues that people sometimes don't understand or misunderstand.

A good example of this is the recent furore that all the Harry Potter films came on to Netflix in the US and people were talking about it as if it was also happening in the UK because they read the US announcement.

ITV owns the UK Broadcast rights for Harry Potter and is expected to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The Office US is on Netflix in the US and Amazon in the UK (because Amazon bought the UK rights)

Everyone should note that when you subscribe to Netflix in the UK, you subscribe to its UK and Ireland service, not Netflix Worldwide. There were back door channels to the US/Can/EU Services but these were discovered by Netflix and shut off.

This is why several BBC shows are not on UK Netflix as they are in the US because they are still on iPlayer

Interestingly, having seen US Netflix they market BBC Shows on that service as Netflix Original, the likes of Happy Valley and Peaky Blinders that are emphatically homegrown shows and not Netflix shows. They must have permission for this, but who are they trying to kid ?

OComeAllYeFaithful · 28/12/2018 17:50

We have both - Prime because we use the online shopping resource. No way would I pay for Prime just for the TV. There are some things I like watching (just finished Scrubs, love The Marvellous Mrs Maisel) but like pp I resent being asked to pay extra on top when I’m already paying for a service!

TeaByTheSeaside · 28/12/2018 18:06

Prime has Outlander so worth it just for that!

I probably watch Netflix and prime equally.

DD only watches Netflix.

DGRossetti · 28/12/2018 18:14

Oh, I understand them perfectly ... doesn't mean I have to agree with them Grin. I was just heads-upping folk.

Tolkiens real allegory, with Lord of the Rings, was a search for a single subscription to all content .... one subscription to view them all

AutoFilled · 28/12/2018 18:17

Neither. I have both. For films you can either rent what you want to see via amazon or Apple. Or you get a now TV movie pass. I have it to for the movies.
www.nowtv.com/watch-movies

If you only want movies, it’s £9.99 a month.

Netflix and now tv do free trials, so what now try all of them out? Amazon might too but we have prime delivery for a very long time.

Fabulouslyfatatfifty · 28/12/2018 18:18

I think we watch them both equally film wise.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 28/12/2018 18:27

I rotate between Now and Netflix, using this site to help me decide which offering is best for a particular period

AaahhwoooooOOOOooOOOOo1 · 29/12/2018 17:44

If you only want movies, it’s £9.99 a month [NowTV]

They do deals through the year which you should keep an eye on

We got a year of Movies + Entertainment (I love a lot of Sky series like Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy) for £99

PeonyBlooms · 29/12/2018 17:47

If you like world cinema look at a mubi subscription. They put up a new world/indie/ arthouse/ocassional Hollywood film each day. So much better than Netflix and Prime for film lovers.

Fabulouslyfatatfifty · 29/12/2018 18:04

We have something like that with Curzon membership Peony, I have never used it but must look into it now you have reminded me.

icannotremember · 29/12/2018 18:06

Netflix. I have prime because of the deliveries, I have never watched anything on it.
