The Yorkshire Dales

Catsize · 27/12/2018 21:23

For many months, my sisters-in-law have been looking for the ideal place to relocate - from London to the Yorkshire Dales.

They are looking for somewhere is the countryside, remote yet within driving distance of somewhere with a pub/restaurant/bookshop.

They are considering Settle, Sedburgh, Hawes, and Dent. However, they are very much open to suggestions and I have told them of Mumsnet wisdom. Please don’t let me down!

Settle is good as its a very pretty market town and near to Skipton , Malham is lovely but is quite rural and a fair drive to civilisation but does have a pub, Ingleton is another nice small town Hawes is quite remote but does have the fabulous wenslydale cheesery pubs and chippies in town

Thank you. 😊

Do they need good transport links, mobile phone signal, good broadband etc? Why are they relocating?

Catsize · 27/12/2018 22:25

Need both broadband and mobile phone. Transport links not essential. Relocating as they need to get away from the congested south and return to countryside roots and northern soul.

I grew up in Sedbergh, it was isolated and people weren’t to welcoming of incomers, Dent is a gorgeous village, but my God it’s remote!

Kirkby Lonsdale is on the edge of the Dales, good connections to the Dales and to the Lakes, and it has a Booths!

Catsize · 27/12/2018 22:30

Yes, they are very aware of the 'incomer' issue, which is one of the reasons behind the thread. They are both mid-fifties, no children.

A Booths is a bonus anywhere! 😁

Elslack? Rural and beautiful with an amazing pub, near Skipton (lovely town).

storminabuttercup · 27/12/2018 22:35

I’d love to live ripon very quiet but not totally remote and has a booths

storminabuttercup · 27/12/2018 22:35

Although it’s not the dales. Ignore me

Catsize · 27/12/2018 22:38

I will pass on these ideas tomorrow. They're staying with us for a couple of night and are already amazed by the Power of Mumsnet. 👍🏻

Masham..Leyburn..On the Eastern side of the Dales. ..Settle..Ingleton..Kirby Lonsdale on the Western side. They'd be my choices.

Squizzard · 27/12/2018 23:01

Settle. Sedbergh. Skipton. Good transport links. Can be quite remote (single track lanes / farm tracks) within a couple of miles of these yet close enough to access services.

Definitely not Hawes Dent or any of the smaller places.

Catsize · 28/12/2018 08:12

Thank you for all these replies. I think one of the concerns with the very small places is the reaction to a same-sex couple moving there from London. It could work very well. Or it could be the total opposite. It's always a bit of a risk, sadly.

I've namechanged for this!

I live in Dent. It is the most wonderful place to live. The community is exceptionally welcoming - there is a good mixture of farmers who have lived here all their lives, and people who have moved in, including from London.

I don't think being a same-sex couple would be at all remarkable. The WI is a great place to make friends.

There's superb broadband via the B4RN project and most places have a mobile signal - worth checking for specific properties though.

Sedbergh is nearby for books, restaurants etc. I've lived in lots of different places, city and rural, and honestly think Dent is the best.

Catsize · 28/12/2018 08:52

Thanks you dentresident. I know they really like Dent. They're out for a run at the moment but are really grateful for all the replies so far. And the tip about Booths. 😁

Pateley bridge ? Not that far from Ripon or Harrogate.....we have our caravan there so have been many times- people friendly and some lovely local shops - butchers etc Loads to do.

Yorkshiredales · 28/12/2018 09:10

I have namechanged for this too!

I grew up near on a farm near Kettlewell and have lived all over the place (world) but settled back on the edge of Ripon which I love.

It doesn’t take much for the weather to affect your life in more rural places and the driving can be a drag. I wanted super fast broadband and modern conveniences which I hadn’t had for 20 years before I moved here (by accident)

If it is their dream, fine, but I would rent for a while before taking the plunge.

I love being able to walk to the cinema (Ripon has a Curzon) or fountains abbey, also has a booths, Sainsbury’s, restaurants, independent shops, tons to do, clubs, tennis club, golf club, football and rugby club, running clubs, etc., etc..

Very low crime rate.

Good transport links, 25 miles to Leeds and York, 10 to Harrogate. Trains to London and Edinburgh < 2hr 30.

Masham is also lovely with plenty going on. Not so good for transport links.

JacquesHammer · 28/12/2018 09:18

Skipton is wonderful. The smaller areas around like Thornton-in-Craven, Grassington etc are equally gorgeous.

There’s a Booths in Ilkley which isn’t miles away! In fact it’s probably about 20 mins on a good run.

JacquesHammer · 28/12/2018 09:22

Oh and if they’re a fan of Booths, they’ll love Keelham Farm Shop in Skipton!

IronyFreeAnnie · 28/12/2018 09:32

I also grew up in Sedbergh - they would not be the first same sex couple there! We have had several same sex couple neighbours and I don’t think they ever had any issues at all.
I think Sedbergh has also got better recently with accepting incomers - there was been a lot of new people to the area and again I don’t know of anyone having any issues - generally as long as people aren’t rude, or dismissive about the town then there are no issues.
There are also loads of community things to get involved with (if they are that way inclined - my parents always seems to be out doing something or other)

Arkengarthdale · 28/12/2018 09:32

I love the way Booths is now a decider! Wish they'd open some more in Yorkshire 😄

FlamingJuno · 28/12/2018 09:46

Booths is going rapidly downhill and I wouldn't be surprised if it goes out of business in the not too distant future, so don't makethat the deciding factor Grin.

JacquesHammer · 28/12/2018 09:47

Booths is going rapidly downhill

I’ve shopped in Booths twice and wasn’t that impressed.

The farm shop though is a dangerous thing Grin
