How do you non 4wd do it.

I'm worrying about travelling when we get the inevitable snow.

Any tips?

I know how to drive in it etc

Sorry I missed that I had to walk as buses stopped running as it was too dangerous. Was literally stranded.

Getting to work in snow is a challenge for most people. Why is having a new job any more of an issue? Presumably other colleagues there will have similar problems?

Troels · 28/12/2018 08:41

I live on top of a steep hill. I and all the neighbours park on the main road in snow or if there is a lot of ice. I put my shoes in my bag and wear snow boots and trudge down the public footpath in the dark
That road is one of the first gritted and cleared, so we do fine getting to work on it.

Apparently we are not getting snow this year down south. Are u north?

madeyemoodysmum · 28/12/2018 08:47

I’m not going in if it does happen

I’m not writing of my car or getting stuck for hours for minimum wage.

I live 19 miles away from work and it’s too far in snow.

Whisky2014 · 28/12/2018 08:47

We don't usually get snow now. It's normally feb time

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2018 09:01

madeyemoody - where did you hear that? While it is mild in the south and likely to continue through to mid January, after that, towards the third week, it seems rather likely that things are going to get much colder and potentially (but not guaranteed) snowy.

xsahm winter weather thread :)

Check if your employer has a bad weather policy. We’re told we can either work from home, take flexi and make the time back or take leave but not to make unnecessary journeys.

They can't say now with any certainty what the weather will do more than a week or two in advance. They may as well be tossing a coin as to what will happen in February and March.

To everyone saying get snow tyres - I thought this counted as a modification for insurance purposes (Uk)

I don't mind the snow too much. I live rurally and drive an AWD Subaru with winter tyres on.

What really scares me is black ice. That awful feeling of the steering suddenly going very loose and a realisation you are actually sliding. Fucking terrifying.

redsummershoes · 28/12/2018 11:59

orange check your insurance. many stipulate that you have to have season appropriate tyres.
it's not a modification to change from summer to winter tyres as long as they fit the specification of ghe vehicle.
if driving in europe it's mandatory in many countries to have winter (or suitable all season) tyres.
