Squished finger (photos) - anything I can do except ice/elevate?

Finger was trapped in a closing door two days ago. I think I'm more concerned at the amount of swelling on the skin than the nail bed bruising.

Does it need looking at, or just keep on with icing it/arnica etc?

Ouchie. Can you move that joint?

ChipInTheSugar · 27/12/2018 19:41

It's moveable now, yes, but hurts if gently pushed the other way.

I think that needs looking at, you might find the pressure under the nail needs relieving and it looks very swollen.
I would go to minor injuries if you have it or a and e.

I'm no medical expert but hope someone will be along soon. You poor thing, I can only imagine your pain Thanks

You might need the nail drilling to release any build up of blood. I did the same recently and it was broken but luckily didn’t need drilling.

raffle · 27/12/2018 19:44

And I was given some oral morphine for the pain which really really helped

hazeyjane · 27/12/2018 19:47

Ow.

I agree, I think you should get it looked at.

Ds squashed his finger in a fire door, and one of the things we were told to look out for was swelling - the way they described it was exactly the way your finger looks.

In ds's case the skin was actually broken (blood everywhere!) And nail hanging off so it could be dressed with an iodine patch and splinted (to protect it from getting bashed)

ChipInTheSugar · 27/12/2018 19:50

hazey that sounds horrendous!!

I did that on holiday in Malta. I pushed a sterile pin through the nail to relieve pressure. Eventually my nail fell off and took the dried blood with it. It grew back fine.

ragged · 27/12/2018 19:53

14yo DS had one like that; after 6 days still in pain & red & swollen, we got it xrayed & they said not broken but yes infected so antiBs for 10 days... 2 days later they revised to say there was a minor break after all. Splint for 6 weeks.

Yours looks A LOT worse than DS's did.

abbsisspartacus · 27/12/2018 19:54

I've done this to my toe a couple of months back it's still black actually,I'm thinking I might have to speak to a medical person eventually

notapizzaeater · 27/12/2018 19:55

Have you a minor injuries unit close by ?

ChipInTheSugar · 27/12/2018 19:55

Get it X rayed.
Minor injuries perfect if you have one with x ray facilities nearby.
Keep your other finger joints moving, they can stiffen up quickly.

hazeyjane · 27/12/2018 20:00

It was Chip - ds has additional needs, and has wonky reactions to pain, so when it happened no one noticed until they saw blood all over his coat pocket! He screamed more about potentially having to have a plaster! Annoyingly it is the door to his classroom, so he now has to always have someone with him when he goes in or out.

I hope your finger gets better quickly.

Thank you!
