Sorry to have posted in chat but wasn't sure where else to post it, anyone had hand foot and mouth and could tell me how it felt and what it was like, Dd has been near someone with hand foot and mouth and isn't well this evening, not sure if she's teething or if this is the start of hfam tia x

Both my little ones have have just had it along with DH so I am well placed to advise! The 3 year old had 1 night of high temperature, a bit lethargic the next day, then broke out in spots the day after but didn’t seem too bothered by them. On the other hand my 7 month old had 3 terrible nights of high temperatures and was clearly in a lot of pain from spots inside her mouth. Both had high temps and lethargy / went offfold before the spots.

I hope your dd hasn’t got it but give calpol if she develops temperature and check inside her mouth for spots. Don’t give ibuprofen as this can cause spots to scar, same as chickenpox.

CajunShrimp · 26/12/2018 22:35

Sorry that should have been ‘went off food before the spots ‘

strawberrie · 26/12/2018 22:40

My two both had it as toddlers and were very out of sorts for a few days - miserable, whiny and clingy, not sleeping etc. The worst of the rash for both of them was in their groin/nappy area rather than in the mouth, but apparently that’s reasonably common.

My two had it at about 2 yrs, wouldn’t settle and I couldn’t figure out why. We had one bad night of them both up crying and fretting pretty much the whole night, then fever and then the spots. They were obviously itchy but they didn’t seem too badly bothered..... then I got it and was tortured. I slept for 5 night s sat upright with both my feet in a basin of cold water and a basin on each side for each hand. It took steroids to clear it up and the doctor said I was a medical anomaly as he’d never seen it so bad. I lost all the top skin from both my hands and feet, and peeled for weeks. It bloody horrible.

CajunShrimp · 26/12/2018 22:42

@hellbent oh that’s awful. You poor thing! My DH just had spots in his mouth and said they weren’t too bad, just a bit sore, so don’t panic OP!

SometimesMaybe · 26/12/2018 22:47

D.C. have had it and it wasn’t too bad, they were run down. I then got it and it was awful. Exhausted, sore and grumpy.

octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 22:48

Thankyou for your replies, ftm here so not sure if I need to take her to the doctor or not?
Is there anything I can do to help her? Originally I did think teething but she is never off her food, when you say blisters in nappy area how do you mean? My dd looked like she had been burnt on her private area earlier ( she's had this with teething ) I'm wondering if that's hfam too rather than teething the burn looking mark on her? Xx

No need for the doc. It will go by itself.

Eatmycheese · 26/12/2018 22:53

Our little girl had been t once when her baby brother was a few days old and then again next year. The first time was horrific. She had a dreadful covering of spots across her face, her hands, her knees, her bottoms and feet. It was so and she was prescribed anti fungal cream for the itching and piriton syrup. Her toenails and fingernails came off the first time too. Both times for about a week she hardly slept and was inconsolable and didn’t eat much at all. She caught a different strain and that’s bad luck Sad

strawberrie · 26/12/2018 22:54

From what I remember it wasn’t distinct blisters (like chicken pox) but more of a red, angry looking spotty rash.

Eatmycheese · 26/12/2018 22:54

Georgie my daughter was so poorly with it we had to take her to the doctor.

octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 22:57

Eatmycheese what symptoms did your baby have with it? Xx

octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 22:57

Can they have a temperature with teething? Xx

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 26/12/2018 22:58

I posted before you- how can you possibly think I was referring to you??

crosser62 · 26/12/2018 23:01

My little one started with feeling hot to touch then blisters on mouth, soles of feet and palms of hands.
Hands and feet described to me by an adult friend who had had hf&m as feeling like they are scalded, the pain was bad.
Took about a week to go the exactly 5 weeks later, every finger nail and toe nail fell off. All grown back fine.

No need for dr as it’s viral in origin, there is no treatment, gets better by itself.

Fluids, painkillers, nice baths to sooth and keep spots clean.

Have a look on NHS choices for it, lots of evidenced based info and treatment suggestions on there.

octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 23:28

Thankyou for your replies, I gave her calpol about 10pm and her temperature is still 39.6 is there anything I can do to help her? Xx

OP posts:
Eatmycheese · 26/12/2018 23:33

Georgie I wasn’t having a go I was merely saying my daughter was so unwell that I took her to the doctors since feared there was something else
@october I thought at first she just had mouth ulcers. Then it was hours of crying and wanting to breastfeed which I had almost weaned her off. Then her temperature rocketed and she started pulling at her knees and feet and crying that her hands were itchy. It was hugely distressing.

octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 23:33

She's only 14 months xx

OP posts:
octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 23:35

How old was your daughter at the time eatmycheese ? Dd has no sign of ulcers or spots yet just off her food irritable and a temperature xx

OP posts:
Eatmycheese · 26/12/2018 23:38

My daughter was 21 months old.

I think if calpol isn’t bringing her temp down and hfm isn’t for sure then I would give her nurofen and see if her temp comes down?
39.6 is a high temp, is she having sufficient fluids?

octoberbaby2010 · 26/12/2018 23:40

She's had her usual bottles of milk but hadn't wanted much food or water at all today, she's fast asleep so would you wake to give nurofen or let her sleep?
Reason why I think hfam is she's been near my nephew who has it, they were together 3 days ago xx

OP posts:
Eatmycheese · 26/12/2018 23:52

If she's asleep then I'd not normally wake her but 39.6 is a Hugh temp and it needs to be brought down. Until hfm is diagnosed or apparent then yes I would give her some nurofen and some fluids and take her temp again in say 20 minutes

Teething can cause a temperature, yes.

Hope she's ok

Eatmycheese · 26/12/2018 23:53

A high temp not a Hugh.
Sorry I'm wrestling my one year old who is still wide awake!

octoberbaby2010 · 27/12/2018 19:02

Thankyou for your replies no spots as of yet so may be teething xx

OP posts:
CajunShrimp · 27/12/2018 19:48

Please don’t give her if you suspect HFAM - not advised at all with HFAM or chickenpox and can make it worse
