What age would you let your child watch a 15 film?

A reasonably violent/gory one? We have guests staying and they have put one on for their 7 yr old , feels a bit too young? Mine are younger so I am wondering if this is what they will expect to watch at that age?

Big Bang is rated 15 on UK Netflix, which is what we watch it on.

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 27/12/2018 14:50

It depends on what film. Drop Dead Fred and Beetlejuice would be fine. However Beetlejuice was in the cinema in October and had been downgraded to a 12A.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 27/12/2018 14:54

I let my 4 year old watch Gremlins but I wouldn't let him watch violent/sexual 15 films, just trust your own insticts.

You can't let a 4 year old watch gremlins 😱 they mention Santa not being real!

kaytee87 · 27/12/2018 15:12

Depends on the film and the child but probably 12 +

madeyemoodysmum · 27/12/2018 18:02

Bellatrix. Apart from the arm part but yes I’d consider it mild. Totally unrealistic throughout. The worst horrors in my opinion are not what you see but what you don’t see

When it’s gratuitous violence by a human to another human. I wouldn’t let dd watch that
Or anything that’s misogynistic rape Violence etc. .

pointythings · 27/12/2018 18:27

It varies wildly. We used to vet 15s before we let our DDs see them and we didn't disagree often (though we did about Deadpool because my H was very pearl-clutchy about swearing).

These days it's just me and DD2 is now almost 16 so it isn't an issue any more - we discuss what we're going to see in the cinema or on Netflix. They've seen some things that are 18 - Sens8 being the probably most controversial example because of the explicit sex - but watch those together and discuss the issues raised.

I can't think of many 15s I'd be comfortable with a 7yo watching though.

HJWT · 27/12/2018 18:35

Depends on the film Sex/Ghosts/Blood/Murder all of this can be in a 15 movie.

Bellatrix14 · 27/12/2018 21:56

@madeyemoodysmum it has got an attempted rape scene though, between a father and his underage daughter, or it’s very heavily implied that’s what’s going to happen? More so than in the book (from what I remember), which made me very much go Hmm

But then so does Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, and I think that’s still a PG...

madeyemoodysmum · 27/12/2018 22:05

@bellatrix Can’t remember that but really. I think it washed over her that it could have been rape just he was violent and abusive.

Dd is 13 and mature. My ds however is a totally different child Much more sensitive about scares blood and sad films. He refuses to watch stuff.

Dd and I just finished the haunted house series on Netflix and both really enjoyed it.

SatsumaFan · 27/12/2018 22:27

So the OP still hasn't enlightened us as to what the film is then?!

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 27/12/2018 22:39

Gremlins has massive Xmas spoiler.

I agree eastenders should be raised to 18.

What a horrific show that is and the nations young exposed to that tripe. Every Xmas they outdo themselves on some sort of violent trash but they seem to see themselves as the nations educators?!!

Bringing up series issues for us. Dreadful.

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/12/2018 18:02

Films that are a 12A at the cinema are often a 15 on DVD as they cannot guarantee an adult watching the film with a minor (according to a friend of mine).

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/12/2018 18:04

Or become 12 not 12A

AlexanderHamilton · 28/12/2018 18:05

I don’t think that is correct unless anyone can cite a specific example. The guidelines for classification for 12 & 12A are identical.

AlexanderHamilton · 28/12/2018 18:06

12Ais a cinema only classification.

12 is video(DVD)

Oblomov18 · 28/12/2018 18:11

Depends. 13-14?
Depends On the film. The child. I've seen some films that I thought were very tame and shouldn't have been a 15.

Nothing scares Ds1. Ds2 I need to be more careful.

Oblomov18 · 28/12/2018 18:12

11 or 12 for Ds1. Film dependant.
Ds2, probably 15!! Maybe 14?

Dimsumlosesum · 28/12/2018 18:13

15

SatsumaFan · 28/12/2018 23:22

Come back OP! I can't sleep not knowing what the chuffing film was ! Grin

buttercreamweeds · 28/12/2018 23:59

15 maybe 14 at a push depending on the child.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 29/12/2018 16:58

My son was about 13 from memory.
