I need to lose weight and focus on my health. I'm looking forward to it! What ideas do you have or are planning to start in the new year to see a healthier you?
For me, I've lost the eating/ cooking fresh veggies. I'm going to lower the sugary starchy carbs and focus on variety of veggies and fruit. I will really push the walking every evening with my dog (have subscribed to audible to make it interesting) and will not be eating chocolate or cake/ biscuits at all.

I drink a lot of coffee....not sure what to do about this though Confused

For me it’s giving up alcohol. I have recently given up for a month and I lost lots of weight! Going to give up for a year in 2019!

CurlsandCurves · 25/12/2018 20:40

Definitely going to look at low carb. When my nurse explained to me that my post workout snack of grapes and fat free yoghurt was essentially a bowl of sugar, I was shocked!

I’ve downloaded the carbs and Cals app.

Numberonecook · 25/12/2018 21:13

I am a (fat) community healthy eating coach so even though there’s not much wrong with what I eat I do eat far too much and don’t do any physical activity.

In the new year I aim to reduce portion sizes, reduce sugar and increase my walking and swimming

I've made a good start with 5:2 and lost 5kg over the past two months, so my goal is to carry on with that.

Todayillbebetter · 25/12/2018 21:29

Well done everyone - I like the ideas so far. I might get myself an extra nice water bottle to take to work and leave my coffee flask at home

Signing in for ideas. So here's my tip. Fall out with someone in the office so badly you avoid office time like the plague and ergo all the snacks there are there. I lost half a stone being busy.

Meanwhile I'm ditching meat and soft drinks in 2019.

Todayillbebetter · 25/12/2018 21:38

Also going to eat a lot more fish and I love veggie Sushi for a quick lunch.

I'm doing Dry January and sugar/refined carb-free January too. Back to normal in Feb but then doing dry and sugar-free Lent as well - from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day, so that's another month and a half.

I want to get into weight lifting again.

evilharpy · 25/12/2018 21:45

My diet isn't that bad but I am going to make a bigger effort to bring lunch to work every day and not end up buying something overpriced and full of additives from Tesco
.
Also more veg and greater variety - I eat the same stuff all the time.

Not food related but I am not getting enough sleep, I've never slept that well but It's been worse recently. I want to get into a routine of going to bed earlier and aim for seven hours a night. Or at least six and a half.

SassitudeandSparkle · 25/12/2018 21:45

My DH was recently diagnosed as type 2 diabetes, so he has been following a low-carb diet. After spending years eating low-fat, he was doubtful about eating larger portions of meat, for example, but boy has it worked! He was a bit of a carb addict (loves bread) so I think cutting down on that and incorporating a bit of exercise has worked wonders. He has lost weight and at his first checkup his blood sugar had dropped to below the normal level, never mind the diabetic range.

If I could just stop stuffing danish pastries in to my face I might do the same. We are eating a lot more veg!

Rainbowsandrascals · 25/12/2018 22:11

I’m signing in as I could have written exactly the same post. We have just got out of the habit of cooking from scratch so we are lacking in fruit and veg. Well done OP for starting this thread!

hidinginthenightgarden · 25/12/2018 22:19

I started my mission to get fit in September. Having a laid back Xmas and back on the diet in the new year plus gym 4 x a week.
Food wise i have cut out snacks except for fruit and upped veg/reduced carbs.

Todayillbebetter · 25/12/2018 23:08

It's good to read that so many of you are on the same path!
I've always crashed dieted before. I have lost and put on the same 3 stone for 10 years now. It's got to be lifestyle, self control and acceptance that I cannot blame anything or anyone else but my own decisions for being 3 stone overweight.

I'm ready ! Finally I'm ready!
Please keep your plans and ideas coming Smile

I'm going to run every day in January. I'd like to run 1000km in 2019.

Last Christmas I was morbidly obese. Today I am 8 stone lighter and healthy BMI.

dinodizzy · 25/12/2018 23:19

I’ve started exercising properly in September but not really put the healthy dieting into play for me to lose the weight. I’ve lost 10lbs from exercise on its own, could be more but I do weight training so it’s also building muscle, but I need to really lose 6 stone to be my ideal weight, a lot of weight to lose I know! So come 2019, I’m going to eat healthily, and carry on my exercise classes I go to (fight klub) as well as get 15,000 steps a day and go on my new exercise bike that I got myself for Xmas for 30-45 minutes a day.

I will also try to drink 2litres of water a day, I manage 1.5 atm but struggle in the evenings to drink water with my dinner.

I'm jumping this because I would love some more success stories and ideas...

I would love to know how people manage day after day and not give in to the old eating patterns. Is it just knuckling down and willpower?

BoswelliaGoldMyrrh · 26/12/2018 21:38

Today... if you eat low carb, you genuinely won't get hungry, and the self control thing isn't an issue (after you get over the initial hump).

Approaching the next meal time, you'll be feeling ready for it and anticipating it quietly, but you won't be on the brink of a smashing up the kitchen hangry spree for a bowl of spaghetti carbonara and ice cream.

Protein and fat are deeply satiating, you'll feel full up when you're full up and good to go for a few hours till the next meal with nary a thought about food. With sugar based foods though, there's no "off switch" in the form of the appetite hormones ghrelin, leptin and insulin to tell you not to over eat. So once you start on a bag of fudge, it's difficult to turn back the sugar juggernaut.

Todayillbebetter · 26/12/2018 22:24

Thank you boswellia. I have bought the blood sugar diet book by Micheal Moseley to help with ideas and recipes... Feels wrong eating full fat stuff!!

OP posts:
FATEdestiny · 27/12/2018 10:00

I wouldn't eat full fat stuff, especially trans fat which are unhealthy.

It's perfectly ok to eat both low carb and low fat.

I believe the buzz-term for this is "clean eating" - you eat mostly lean (ie low fat) protein and vegetables. I've eaten mostly like that for the last year and have lost 8 stone. I include pulses and fruit and also run about 40 miles.

lastqueenofscotland · 27/12/2018 11:14

Eating my 5 a day 😬 I’m vegan and hardly ever manage it it’s shameful.

I run a lot but want to do more yoga/swimming/weights

Drink less Blush

feelingverylazytoday · 27/12/2018 12:31

Todayillbebetter I think your body just gets used to it. I hate the feeling of being full and bloated now.
I'm going to carry on doing what I did in 2019. Eating plain simple food in correct portions, 5 a day, keep 'treats' to a minimum, no alcohol, swimming as much as possible and walking however many miles my daughter drags me.

AGHHHH · 27/12/2018 14:09

Give up liquid calories.

I think I've become a fat bastard from coffee alone.

starcrossedseahorse · 27/12/2018 14:27

Cut down on coffee and cheese.
