How much a month roughly should I budget for a car?

I would like something on lease or finance if the finance would be a similar cost to the lease.

I'm a new driver.

I don't want an old first car really. I feel very confident on the road and haven't had any accidents with anyone else's yet Grin

How much can I expect to pay, monthly, for a new car (something like a crossland x), insurance and whatever else?

How.old are you?

I know a few 17yr olds driving small engine, cheap.insurance cars and 1st year was better part of £2K just for insurance.

£200 a month insurance and for the lease it depends on the value of the car, the length of the lease and if you keep the car at the end - £500 a month maybe?

At least £200 for the car
At least £200 for insurance
At least £50 for fuel
Road tax on new cars should be cheap or even free.
Servicing and mot should be included.

Personally I'd allow at least £500 minimum probably nearer £1000 realistically.

I pay 150 for a new car (Citroen c3) on 4 year finance plan. Have to pay 3k at end of agreement or re-finance for remaining 3k. This includes a service plan.
Insurance as a new driver was around £70 a month with this car - small engine. Tax is £20 a year.

I've just got a brand new automatic Citreon C1 for 195 per month, I think these are the cheapest cars. Small engine too, for cheaper insurance.

MOT and road tax included. I pay about 20 per month for servicing.

My insurance was around 2k (I'm 23, passed about 6 months ago)

I have a 2016 Kia Sportage worth about £13,500, pay £160 per month for the car on HCP, £12 tax, £60 insurance and around £70 petrol

I have thought about getting a little 5 door Corsa but assumed the insurance would be higher, plus I need the car very soon practically so cannot afford to put away for a little while to buy it outright

Brand new car and new driver under 25 insurance will be extortionate. I would do some rough quotes on a comparison site to give you an idea

Look at insurance through ingenie
get something small and cheap to have the tracker put in
and build up a couple of years of no claims

Have a look round, some garages offer free insurance with new smaller cars

I think at 20 its a bit of a waste to expect/pay for a new car or lease car. Much better use of finances to buy second hand .

I passed my test in April, I'm 28. I had to go for a 7 seater so prices may vary for you.
I chose a 1.6 diesel 7 seater at £9000.

Finance £241 per month over 5 years ( awful credit)
Insurance fully comp with breakdown and named driver £130 per month (£450 excess) with admiral
Tax £12 per month
Diesel roughly £120 per month (school run 2x day, running around all weekend and sometimes a trip further afield)
Service plan £24 per month

Service plan is not necessary but makes me feel better that I can take it for a service each year and not worry about the cost.
I don't save for mot and will pay at the time if any work is needed.

The insurance quotes didn't differ much at all between a 08 plate and a 13 plate. Never tried a brand new car as was way out of my price range!!

They're all saying around £850+ insurance a month for a crossland x 2017 car Xmas Shock

Surely that's can't possibly be right!

Will be rather dependent on mileage and planned use.

Assuming doing a fair few miles HMRC aren’t far off with 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles a year then 25p thereafter.

To be fair that’s based on our experience, which will be paying less for insurance. If low mileage use cost per mile will increase.

Not entirely sure what a Crossland x is but assuming it's a bigger car by the name. What about a smaller car? I pay £140 a month for my finance, my insurance is really cheap because it's a city car (I have lots of no claims so obviously it's cheaper than yours will be), and it's free tax and very high mpg. I'd say I spend £250 a month on my car including petrol

If you get a 2017 car you are paying the depreciation.
Buy a 2012 car that is ready depreciated
nice small engine
fit a tracker
save a fortune

The insurance company assessed your risk as high so high premium.

That's why new drivers go for cars worth £900 with a tiny engine that can't go quick.
