How much a month roughly should I budget for a car?

treesoftwinkle · 24/12/2018 18:06

I would like something on lease or finance if the finance would be a similar cost to the lease.

I'm a new driver.

I don't want an old first car really. I feel very confident on the road and haven't had any accidents with anyone else's yet Grin

How much can I expect to pay, monthly, for a new car (something like a crossland x), insurance and whatever else?

Thank you!

How.old are you?

I know a few 17yr olds driving small engine, cheap.insurance cars and 1st year was better part of £2K just for insurance.

itsboiledeggsagain · 24/12/2018 18:10

Plenty websites to tell you that. Put the details in and away you go

treesoftwinkle · 24/12/2018 19:34

I have tried online but can't find anything giving the info I need in realistic terms

Lwmommy I am 20

£200 a month insurance and for the lease it depends on the value of the car, the length of the lease and if you keep the car at the end - £500 a month maybe?

KlutzyDraconequus · 24/12/2018 19:48

At least £200 for the car
At least £200 for insurance
At least £50 for fuel
Road tax on new cars should be cheap or even free.
Servicing and mot should be included.

Personally I'd allow at least £500 minimum probably nearer £1000 realistically.

waryandbored · 24/12/2018 19:53

I pay 150 for a new car (Citroen c3) on 4 year finance plan. Have to pay 3k at end of agreement or re-finance for remaining 3k. This includes a service plan.
Insurance as a new driver was around £70 a month with this car - small engine. Tax is £20 a year.

SunnySideUpX · 24/12/2018 19:54

I've just got a brand new automatic Citreon C1 for 195 per month, I think these are the cheapest cars. Small engine too, for cheaper insurance.

MOT and road tax included. I pay about 20 per month for servicing.

My insurance was around 2k (I'm 23, passed about 6 months ago)

Lauren83 · 24/12/2018 19:55

I have a 2016 Kia Sportage worth about £13,500, pay £160 per month for the car on HCP, £12 tax, £60 insurance and around £70 petrol

treesoftwinkle · 24/12/2018 20:00

Personally I'd allow at least £500 minimum probably nearer £1000 realistically.

£1000?! Shock

I have thought about getting a little 5 door Corsa but assumed the insurance would be higher, plus I need the car very soon practically so cannot afford to put away for a little while to buy it outright

Brand new car and new driver under 25 insurance will be extortionate. I would do some rough quotes on a comparison site to give you an idea

AJPTaylor · 24/12/2018 20:03

Try Marmalade.

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 20:04

Look at insurance through ingenie
get something small and cheap to have the tracker put in
and build up a couple of years of no claims

Redtartanshoes · 24/12/2018 20:05

Have a look round, some garages offer free insurance with new smaller cars

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 24/12/2018 20:05

I think at 20 its a bit of a waste to expect/pay for a new car or lease car. Much better use of finances to buy second hand .

Fivetoomany · 24/12/2018 20:08

I passed my test in April, I'm 28. I had to go for a 7 seater so prices may vary for you.
I chose a 1.6 diesel 7 seater at £9000.

Finance £241 per month over 5 years ( awful credit)
Insurance fully comp with breakdown and named driver £130 per month (£450 excess) with admiral
Tax £12 per month
Diesel roughly £120 per month (school run 2x day, running around all weekend and sometimes a trip further afield)
Service plan £24 per month

Service plan is not necessary but makes me feel better that I can take it for a service each year and not worry about the cost.
I don't save for mot and will pay at the time if any work is needed.

Fivetoomany · 24/12/2018 20:09

Sorry my car is 5 years old.

Fivetoomany · 24/12/2018 20:10

The insurance quotes didn't differ much at all between a 08 plate and a 13 plate. Never tried a brand new car as was way out of my price range!!

treesoftwinkle · 24/12/2018 20:10

Thank you Thanks

I must be doing something wrong on these quote sites.

They're all saying around £850+ insurance a month for a crossland x 2017 car Xmas Shock

Surely that's can't possibly be right!

Will be rather dependent on mileage and planned use.

Assuming doing a fair few miles HMRC aren’t far off with 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles a year then 25p thereafter.

Asdf12345 · 24/12/2018 20:17

To be fair that’s based on our experience, which will be paying less for insurance. If low mileage use cost per mile will increase.

treesoftwinkle · 24/12/2018 20:18

I'm wondering if I can add my mother in law on to cut costs Xmas Grin

Not entirely sure what a Crossland x is but assuming it's a bigger car by the name. What about a smaller car? I pay £140 a month for my finance, my insurance is really cheap because it's a city car (I have lots of no claims so obviously it's cheaper than yours will be), and it's free tax and very high mpg. I'd say I spend £250 a month on my car including petrol

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 20:19

If you get a 2017 car you are paying the depreciation.
Buy a 2012 car that is ready depreciated
nice small engine
fit a tracker
save a fortune

KlutzyDraconequus · 24/12/2018 20:20

The insurance company assessed your risk as high so high premium.

That's why new drivers go for cars worth £900 with a tiny engine that can't go quick.

donajimena · 24/12/2018 20:20

You could. I've got my mum on mine. Its cheaper.
