What are you doing this Christmas that's a bit different..

..to what you normally do?

Our extended family (siblings, their partners, and their kids), is increasing in size year on year. We like to spend Christmas together, but there are too many of us to comfortably fit in someone's house, so we have decided that this year we are going out. There are 18 of us going to an Indian restaurant. I don't think I've been as excited about food over the festive season for years, if at all.

So, what are you doing that's different?

We had our Christmas dinner today, so tomorrow we can have a lovely lazy day and nibble on leftovers.

DP and I are doing that too (we're having ours tonight). Leftovers are better anyway and it means on Xmas Day all you need to do is stand in front of the fridge and pile a plate before returning to the sofa.

mumonashoestring · 24/12/2018 17:23

We usually have the big afternoon dinner but this year we have no dining room to use (remodeled into DM's bedroom) so it's buffet/party food all the way.

TwiceMagic · 24/12/2018 17:31

It’s my first Christmas without my horrible ex (it was over this time last year, but we still had to live together and do Christmas). So it’s me and my DSes this year in our new house. 😁

Staying home tonight for the first time in six years. I'd rather be in the pub but I've had to quarantine myself on account of an attack of the runs early Sunday morning. Bored sideways but I'll get tea on soon.

SpeckledyHen · 24/12/2018 17:40

Face-timed my first born son who is Oz travelling. Happy that he is having a ball but it’s not the same without him here .

CoodleMoodle · 24/12/2018 17:58

It's DS's first Christmas (5 months), which is exciting. DD(4) can't wait to help her baby brother open his presents! He's only got a few but it's enough. Plus we have DD's mountain to get through as well...

HappyPunky · 24/12/2018 18:00

DD is coming up to 3 and this is the first year she understands about Christmas so we're leaving mince pies for santa and carrots for the reindeer tonight.

NotCitrus · 24/12/2018 18:23

Really counting our blessings and not caring about the house being a mess or not beautifully decorated, in the slightest.

Two days ago FIL was rushed to hospital. Yesterday MrNC wasn't sure if he'd get there in time to see him, but they decided they could operate. FIL has come through the op and should make a full recovery, as much as anyone in their eighties does. So suddenly instead of worrying about MIL and funerals, it's Christmas as usual, albeit with plans to stay near FIL later in the week. And a huge reminder of what's important.

I may have blubbed in relief over a few people in the supermarket this morning.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 24/12/2018 21:22

Going for a curry tomorrow, at an Indian restaurant as opposed to the usual turkey and trimmings (and loooong fucking day) at ILs.

And the ILs are impressed! No filling/emptying the dishwasher, serving up, clearing up etc for dh, dbil dsil and I (the other real reason I booked it 😄).
Can’t wait. Plus, dh is working Boxing Day so we’ll be leaving (very)early, and I’m driving so I get to say what time we leave...another bonus 😄.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 24/12/2018 21:24

@NotCitrus, glad things went ok with FIL 💐

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 24/12/2018 21:34

...as in, dh, me, dsil and dbil not having to do the clearing up etc etc.

candlefloozy · 24/12/2018 21:42

Having Christmas dinner in my own house made by me and oh. Can't wait.

nessus · 24/12/2018 22:34

A park run!

Lottapianos · 25/12/2018 08:35

Yay nessus! Well done. I considered doing the same myself but decided I was too lazy. Enjoy!

Bluesheep8 · 25/12/2018 08:41

DP and I are volunteering at a Christmas lunch for people who don't want to be alone on Christmas day. I've got my tiny turkey joint and stuffing in the oven and we will have that in sandwiches with lots of nibbles and cheese and crackers this evening.

Magissa · 25/12/2018 08:48

My dad has Dementia and moved into a care home in February. Following two broken hips this year he is now unable to walk and can only be hoisted. We will go and see him this morning (I go every day) but there is no way we can get him to our house so this is going to be the first Christmas for us without being together.

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 25/12/2018 08:54

DH and I are snuggled up in our caravan in a field in Wales. Fridge is stocked up. Wine is plentiful and we will get up soon and walk on the beach

GaryBaldbiscuit · 25/12/2018 09:13

jealous of your caravan in wales. @Martin
quite often ds has worked but this year it is me! and tomorrow morning dd works.
but we will work out our day around this, and eat in the evening. Fingers crossed dc wont be too full of booze to cook.

ShalomJackie · 25/12/2018 09:19

This!

What are you doing this Christmas that's a bit different..
AnnaMariaDreams · 25/12/2018 09:21

Having afternoon tea rather than Christmas dinner.

Howtodeal · 25/12/2018 09:22

Going to the local rescue centre to help walk the dogs. I've just started as a volunteer and I'm enjoying it so much!

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 25/12/2018 09:23

We're barbecuing the turkey!!

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/12/2018 09:25

Well, I've already had my Christmas dinner Grin - seafood curried rice in a seaside diner in Hong Kong! (It's 8 hours in front of the UK.)

Normally we host dinner for 12, but DS is spending his 2nd year of Uni in HK and we have come out to spend Christmas with him.

Merry Christmas to you all Grin!

We had our Christmas dinner yesterday, and today we're making our own pizza's for actual lunch/dinner.

We're having people over for brunch but that's just pastries, so nothing worrying.

Also, my mom is in the country for Christmas for the first time in 13 years so it's lovely to see her
