..frankly I'd have said yes to Gabriel Oak when he bought over a lamb in the first 5 minutes. There'd be no film.

Gabriel Oak is the sort of man who melts your knickers by just quietly getting on with things and looking all rugged.

My DH is of similar stock, this may not be a coincidence.

I loved this film when I saw it at the cinema - matinee performance, mostly ladies of a certain age swooning.

Watch the Julie Christie version.
Glorious.

When I watch the Julie Christie version now, it seems very mannered in a 1960s way, even though it has some excellent people in it.

My and my friend at school used to hang out on the wing during hockey and discuss the wonder that is Gabriel Oak.

We had an agreement with the PE teacher that if we hit the ball once, she'd leave us alone for the rest of the lesson.

I read it at school and saw the Julie Christie version then, but can't read or watch it as an adult, because I have a flock of 21 on my croft and the body count for the sheep in that book is just too high!

I watched the recent version in September with 12yo DD. Trying to get her to work out which ones are the good’uns.
Although we did feel sorry for neighbour Boltwood and all the presents he bought.
Great film (love the book, too) but Alan Bates is super-hot in the 70’s version.
