May I have your drama film recommendations please?

I love dramas(in any language) and I'd appreciate some recommendations.

I'll watch almost anything but I'm not especially a fan of action packed dramas. I tend to prefer more 'human' dramas that focus on one or two individuals or a family. The issues that they're facing can be minor or set against the background of much bigger events. I'm open to most things, comedic dramas included, but I'm really not looking for a lot of action.

TIA for any ideas.

SugarmouseHouse · 23/12/2018 14:50

I haven't no, thank you. I'll definitely check that out.

Have you got Netflix? If so then try Dumplin’. I thought it was fantastic

I loved The Railway Man.

MyPoodleisWorthTenofYou · 23/12/2018 15:02

I’m a big fan of dramas too and can definitely recommend. Also Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Three Billboards, Julie and Julia, Argo, I liked Babel, Room was also very good.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/12/2018 16:01

An older film that shows up on regular TV occasionally that I thought was excellent is The Magdalene Sisters.
It's a sobbfest, and possibly triggering in places, but I recommend it.

The Lives of Others - German film about Berlin in the 80s and a secret policeman who is carrying out surveillance on writer. I love it, and if you like human drama that focuses on individuals, then this is the one for you. I reckon it has the most perfect ending of any film ever (except maybe ET Grin )

CormoranStrike · 23/12/2018 16:35

Three Billboatda is amazing.

I also adored Pride.

ImportantWater · 23/12/2018 16:36

I love Life is Sweet, with Alison Steadman and Jim Broadbent.

MrsWicket · 23/12/2018 16:53

Music Box staring Jessic Lange. It’s an oldie but very good. Woman In Gold with Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren is great too.

CatnissEverdene · 23/12/2018 16:55

We watched one on Sky last night called Gifted. Amazing film.

Agree with the pp about Babel - a very haunting film.

DoraJar · 23/12/2018 17:29

Oh yes ‘the lives of others’ is fantastic (in my top 10). If you like a thriller then I also love the french film ‘tell no one’ and then for the joy of Rome go for ‘the great beauty’. Also love ‘far from the madding crowd’ with Carey Mulligan and anything by the Cohen brothers!

florentina1 · 23/12/2018 17:35

Nothing to Hide on NetflixExcelent

CatnissEverdene · 23/12/2018 17:47

I just remembered a film called Lion. My DDs and I watched it on holiday, it was such a gorgeous film. A slowly unfurling tale and a real tear jerker.

SugarmouseHouse · 23/12/2018 20:53

Thank you all for the recommendations so far. I'm looking forward to checking all of them out

The Beat That My Heart Skipped.

HebeMumsnet · 23/12/2018 21:20

Oh and The Death of Stalin. Comedy but very dramatic comedy. By the people that made The Thick of It.

MargotMoon · 23/12/2018 21:40

Some great suggestions here.

Three I've watched this year which i loved and are on Netflix:

God's Own Country
American Honey
The Lunchbox

cardibach · 23/12/2018 21:43

Fun fact - when I toured Morocco my bus driver was the driver from Babel. The roads are so bad they needed an actual driver! He was a miserable git as it happens. I didn’t much like the film either.
I second Pride. I enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven.

WildCherryBlossom · 24/12/2018 05:30

I watched Maggie's plan recently on Netflix and loved it. Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/12/2018 06:07

If you want a real old drama classic, try Twelve Angry Men. It was made in 1957 so it really is old but well worth a watch.
