Bright Ideas needed - no oven!

Our oven glass shattered yesterday. So we have no way of cooking the majority of Christmas or Boxing Day that we are hosting.

I’ve spoken to repair companies locally who have said it’s not a part they keep in stock and spare parts companies are closed for Christmas. I’ve trawled spare parts websites and even those that have it in stock are closed for Christmas
Potentialy the part exists in Stoke and could be collected on a Monday. We are in Surrey. Normally DH or I would drive up however it’s complicated by the fact that I’m 39 weeks pregnant so I shouldn’t really be 2 hours from home and same for him. I’ve looked at couriers which are £300+.

Anything I’ve not thought of? Beyond panic?!

I don't know where you are in Surrey but there is a company called Gillet and Holden who are based in Hindhead who stock a lot of parts, they might come to you, I know they travel quite some way when they have clients who have moved house. Might be worth a call and offer them a bit extra for travelling further if necessary?

@LEMtheoriginal thanks so much for the offer - really kind. Our turkey is pretty big so I’m looking at bigger table top ovens on amazon now in the hope I can find one that will fit it without me needing to carve it up! Thanks again though, not least for alerting me to the existence of table top ovens which may be our saviour

No worries. Didnt think it would be big enough but worth a try. Anyone else want a mini oven? Grin

I hope you sort it out and you have a wonderful Christmas x

Ask local kitchen shops too, as they often take out old ovens and may have a pile of them waiting to be recycled. They would probably be happy to help ( even more so if you can give them some publicity in the local papers "Bla Bla Kitchens saved our Christmas " etc etc )

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 23/12/2018 08:16

Nb . A single oven usually just needs a plug socket, double ovens need a proper cable so avoid a double.
Alternatively B&Q etc have single ovens in stock that are cheap too ! Good for Crimbo then sell it on after your Britannia is fixed ??

I'm in Surrey, happy for you to cook your turkey here tomorrow if that helps, you could then heat it up with hot gravy on christmas day?

BertrandRussell · 23/12/2018 08:25

Have you got a kettle type barbecue? You can cook anything in one of those, including the roast potatoes. Buy an electric steamer for the vegetables.

DinosApple · 23/12/2018 08:27

Buy a microwave oven. You can do the turkey in there. If it doesn't fit take the legs off. Also you can cook it Christmas Eve.

The only thing that won't taste so good is roast potatoes, ask a guest if they can do them and bring. They can do them first thing, leave them in the tray and wrap in foil and a few towels.

Good luck,my parents oven blew last Dec and that's how we solved it (dinner for 10 and I brought the spuds).

babysharkah · 23/12/2018 08:29

An you distribute the food to guest for them to cook and bring over I'm sure they'd understand and I would certainly be willing to help if it was one of my friends!

@DangerousMouse
What a lovely offer ! This is why I love MN !

IfYouLikeALotOfChocolate · 23/12/2018 11:35

@DangerousMouse thank you so much. We have a neighbour on standby in case we don’t end up with a better solution

For anybody even vaguely interested in a boring oven update - the manufacturer drove us the replacement part from Stoke to surrey today, foc. We’ve replaced the glass and are gingerly waiting for the oven to heat up now.
But what amazing service - rare to hear nowadays!
