Does this Sound Like Food Poisioning

Went to a well know Italian chain restaurant yesterday for a meal with family yesterday. DS 12 ordered a spaghetti/chili prawn dish. He loves seafood and it is not a very spicy dish e
He has woken at 4am this morning and we are currently downstairs with him suffering stomach cramps/nausea and he is really cold/pale but not clammy.
My first thoughts are the prawns ...

Could just be the richness of the food, but I'd certainly be suspecting the prawns. If he starts squirting out both ends, particularly.

Or maybe a seasonal norovirus from school/family?

Get well soon little Basil!

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 23/12/2018 05:35

Definitely could be. He will probably get over it quick though, so hopefully will be ok for Xmas! Poor thing, just treat like any gastro thing, loads of liquid and plain food as he can tolerate.

donajimena · 23/12/2018 05:37

It is possible but difficult to say. If he becomes ill I'd suggest contacting your environmental health department.
It may not be the prawns it could be cross contamination. Usually the chains do heat and eat rather than prepare fresh though.

think there was a bug at his school but as he finished Wednesday had hoped it had passed him by. Started on the loo now so hopefully over soon. Just hoping if its a bug it doesn't hit us all ... going to stock up on bleach when the shops open

I don’t know if it’s appropriate for his age, but buscopan IBS tablets are a wonder for norrovirus/gastroenteritis type stomach cramps if he’s in a lot of pain.

Basilandparsleyandmint · 23/12/2018 07:28

he has been sick now and the stomach cramps have stopped a bit now but will try a chemist if it starts up again and see if he can have them -thx

I'd definitely say it's a bug! I work in a school and also, my own kids had this a couple of weeks ago. I notice (because the kids at school give me a full 'report' of their noro Confused) that this season's gastro bug is less vomitty/more crampy. So even if the kids have been sick, they've vomitted once, maybe twice. My kids were extremely nauseated and had a high fever/cold/hot/shaky/clammy, but didn't vomit. Same with me. But we all had pain and cramps, particularly the kids. It all came out the other end though, for days.
At school, the students would complain about cramps and pain. Next day they'd be off school, returning a couple of days later to tell me of their 'saga'. So my hope for you is that your DS is only sick a couple of times.

You'd be amazed by the number of parents who collect a sick child from school one day and have them back in at school the next day. This is exactly how this stuff gets spread.

Yep, get that hot water and bleach going. I also spray sterizar hard surface spray around the house. Let it sit for a minute or so before wiping.

The stomach cramps make me think food poisoning over a bug. Hope feels better soon

twoheaped · 23/12/2018 07:49

If you suspect food poisoning and a restaurant, you need to get a poo sample.
Environmental Health can do little with an allegation and no evidence.
There are heaps with the sickness bug round our way, I'd be more inclined to think it's that. 20% of the teachers were off with it at one of the schools last week.

OComeAllYeFaithful · 23/12/2018 08:01

It’s very difficult to tell. We all had a bug in October and the stomach cramps were agony! We knew it was a bug as it went round the family (and then the school). The only thing that specifically makes it sound like food poisoning is the timing.

To be fair, the treatment is the same - gently rehydrate (try ice lollies if he can’t sip fluids), slowly reintroduce food. Get him using a separate towel for hand washing and ensure everyone does thorough hand washing. I hope he’s better for Christmas and no-one else gets ill!

ContadoraExplorer · 23/12/2018 08:09

I've just had 6 days of it. At first I also thought it was from the restaurant we'd eaten at but there's so many people I've spoken to have had similar symptoms that I now think it was a bug. Finally seems to have stopped now - just in time for Christmas.

Fingers crossed your house doesn't have it as long as I did!

sparkli · 23/12/2018 16:51

This sounds like what I have just now. I was starting to worry a bit as I haven't heard of anyone with similar symptoms, but I've never had such bad cramps. Haven't been sick and don't feel nauseous, but have had a bit of diarrhoea today.y tummy also hurts when I move. Feeling a bit sorry for myself as the rest of the family are enjoying the festivities without me!
